The OA is B, but I believe C is correct, any expert can explain.

I will go for (C).
Reason:
In (A), them cannot refer to the army of ...
In (B), it can refer to the army of or afterlife, thus, such choice may create confusion.
Choice (D) and (E) obviously are incorrect.

So, I pick (C)

What is the source of this question?
