I don't believe one section is weighted more heavily than the other, but the raw scores and percentiles are different in quant and verbal (in a nutshell, fewer people reach high verbal scores).
The actual calculations are not published by ETS, but here are some observations: Quant raw scores have been climbing, and it now takes a 51 to reach the 99th percentile in quant, while a 48 (just 3 points lower!) now represents only the 87th percentile. By comparison, in the verbal section, there is a 7 point difference between the 99th and the 87th percentile (45 vs 38).
I have collected some empirical evidence to share with my students and to give them an idea of where they need to aim in each section to reach a specific total target. The following is based on data I've collected from the debriefing posts on this website over approx. the last 5 months. For the same overall score, results are sorted by decreasing quant score:
