Need Help - How to tame the Quant Section?

Hi Guys!

I recently took the GMAT and found the Quant section to be really tough. I was consistently getting 47 – 49 on all the preps, but somehow completely lost it during the real exam.

I ‘m planning to retake the test soon and will really appreciate if you can recommend a plan or books to improve in the quant section

Thanks in advance.

/D

What was thy strategy for quan? Trying to attempt all 37 questions no matter what or trying to make sure u get them right ?
How much did you score?

I dont think you have an issue with quant in terms of material but it might be thy strategy ...if u share it im sure people will come out and point the flaws

Nice question.... Just want to know what should be our strategy...to get all of them right or..some other strategy...because even I am scared now with the feedback on scores compared to Prep's............

Please share your views..............

Well, I didn't have any specific strategy for quant and I did each and every Q from OG 10, 11 and 12. I was very confident about the Quant section, but on the G - Day it all went wrong. I came across a lot of tough DS Q that I couldn't interpret. Also, I realized I was falling short of time and skipped the last three questions.

My 2 cents..
I found myself rusty in Inequalities, Rate and co-ordinate geometry questions. (didn't get any combinations or probability)

Trust me I was always able to finish all my Preps well in time and never got more than 11 Questions wrong. On the G-day i was expecting worse but i managed Q 47. Now, my biggest fear is that my luck might not help me the second time when I take the gmat and might end up with a lower score on Quants.

Dhruv,

I've heard the same from a lot of test takers recently. GMAC seems to have a new found love with complex DS Q's and none of the prep books, OGs have this. I most humbly and respectfully would suggest drilling down the last 50-60 DS Qs on OG12 and then focusing on Verbal a lot.

I say this because there is only so much u could do in Quant and have to rely on your luck on the exam day to get less complex DS questions. But by being thorough in Verbal , you can have a cake walk to 700s even if u manage a 46-47 in Q .

my $0.02 ...

Thanks for sharing that. I think 47 is not too bad of a score but it seems like you were rusty in some areas ....jus doing OG doesnt help now because these days the exam is pretty tough ....I have found most of the books to be irrelevant because GMAT has changed quiet a lot ....however, if you can get your hands on manhattangmat online tests ...they are really tough on maths and by doing them and focusing on fixing thy mistakes on tougher questions .....i think you can certainly get around 50

Thank you, All!

Yes, I am focusing on doing quant from - Manhattan Online Tests (+ planning to buy the additional questions for $5 / each section), Kaplan tests, and Kaplan 800 book.

Grad.mad - I did do OG 12 twice, but it really didn't help. But I will do it again, and this time will analyze the Questions that I got right. :-(

In Retrospect - None of the OGs (both Quant & Verbal) can be compared to the real gmat.

Btw, I’m doing Kaplan Math Workbook to get hold of the basics and word problem…just incase.

Once again, thank you!

I recommend Kaplan Advanced or Kaplan 800 for practicing tough questions.

Go through Kaplan's toughest problems and Kaplan's GMAT 800. If you are in india, you could have come across TIME and IMS DS sets in MockCATs.. Those are somewhat tough.. if u can practice those, you might get some confidence in u'r second attempt.. all the best
