I noticed this site a couple of weeks ago and I've been learning from everyone's comments'. I'm a 4th grade teacher and my wife and I are having our first baby later this month or early January. My salary just isn't enough to cover the expenses of a family(Hispanic family
) . I'm excited to be a daddy but I need another career. I hope to score above 700 on the gmat. It may not happen for a while but, I've got determination adn patience. Just wanted to say hi and thanks.

With a baby on the way, you're probably not going to be able to get much studying done for the next year.
But welcome to our forum, and congrats on your new year baby!![]()

Thanks for responding Erin. The baby motivates me to do well on this test and thank you. I'm happy she'll be here soon. I started studying the Kaplan 2005 with software and am trying to study about 2 hrs daily. I've got a 2 week Christmas break coming and plan on really studying hard during that time. I've got Kaplan(highly recomended around here), Princeton Review and I just got NOVA with software. I've also down loaded the power prep software and I'll order the Official Guide this week... If there's any other materials you recommend, let me know. I don't think I'll be taking a class but, I'll see where I stand in a month.
Hi Sandman,
I have 2 young kids (1 yr old, and 2 yr 3 month), so studying was quite a challenge. But my family was so supportive in my efforts, it made the whole thing possible. My wife is a full time student at Anderson-UCLA, so she had her plate full already, so I really need to depend on other people for help. I found that it was truly motivating to think about my kids when I was either studying or taking the test. It really kept me going during the times when I didn't want to study or was getting tired, so forth, and also, kept me focused during the test when my mind was starting to wander off. (I did ok, but about or below average compared to the rest of the brainiacs here, 690, 710 - long story short, I messed up and quite bitter that I didn't score 750)
I studied for roughly 3 weeks for my first attempt and 2 weeks for my second attempt. I had a lot of help from my family (my mom, in particular was wonder woman during my prep.). So it's very possible to score 700 with a baby...or 2.
I think it's great that you want to better your life for your coming baby. She is already a lucky girl, even b4 she's born, to have a responsible and caring parent like yourself. I'd offer to help you, but you're already at the right place with so many willing helpers here. I really wish you the best of luck on your prep!
I think you're on the right path by getting Kaplan. Go through all of that material and pick up the Official Guide for verbal. (as you've probably read already, the math is much more difficult on the actual test compared to the Official Guide) and 2 hrs a day is a very good schedule. You're doing everything right so far, so it's just a matter of time b4 you're ready to ace this. Good luck! Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Hi Sandman,
All the very best and welcome to the forum. You are at the right place - like many others, I too benefitted a lot from some wonderful people here and would rate this place right up there with Official Guide and Kaplan 800 for my G-performance.
OK, I had one advantage(disadvantage?) - the only thing I had to bother about was a 10+ hour a day job as a Techie(OK that needs some bothering...); no wife, kids or Girl-friends for me.![]()
Hats off to you for the determination and attitude to embark on something bigger. That's something I find woefully lacking in very many people around me...
Regards,
vin.
