My dismal Gmat score of 610
Hi..
I gave my gmat exam on 4th july..and got a dismal score of 610(q49,v25)... I found the gmat exam a bit tougher than gmat prep tests... My bad score is not only due to the toughness of the exam, but also due to poor time management and nervousness during the exam... I was left with around 8 questions in english which i just marked in the end... I found 2 rc's tough which consumed my most part... can anyone please give me any suggestion to improve rc part? I am very disappointed by my score and right now am in analysing mode and will post my findings soon...For the exam i did og, manhattan sc, kaplan cr, gave 30 gsets, a kaplan test, powerprep tests, 800 score test, gmat score test, manhattan test, princeton test, manhattan cambridge test series, did 450 sc of sc1000, around 110 cr of cr1000.... can anyone please suggest me what else to do for a better score? And also, please tell me what is the scope of universities in which i can apply with this score ( i know it is a bad question...just trying to be optimistic..) |

Hi quickqwerty
Guessing several questions at the end of the test can possible lead to a bad score. As GMAT punishes for consecutive wrong answers, I think probably you have made several mistakes in the last part of verbal which has pulled your verbal score down. Your quant score is great. How was your performance in GMATprep? If you have scored 700+ in GMATprep then I would suggest to appear for the test once again good luck |

I had the same fate on 23rd June!!
in my last three months,I never got less than 650(even in MGMAT where chances of repeat are less,my scores were 660-710) in last 5 months,I had almost covered everything(even LSAT RCs numbering 40-50) on the D day,I got 590(Q48,V24) thanks mainly due to pressure and poor time mgmt issue(I spent 35 mins in first 13 verbal Qs.Got BF CR also) I am writing again in august-first week(my target is PGPX) |

time management is very important. Learn to cut your loses. I mean you should have a fair idea when to guess a question and move ahead. And during verbal try to take minimum time in SC as staring for more duration will not help. If you can not spot the error in the first read, then chances are less that you will hit that questions after reading several times. In case of SC questions which are underlined as a whole, try to practice to test every SC concepts in one shot. If you save enough time from SC questions, you will have more time to read the RC and CR and that will possibly help you to increase your score.

I think Subarao is right. I tend to spend less time on SC cause the more you stare at it, the more other choices look right.. !! funny right !!. So read the SC try to spot the error, make your selection in not more than a minute and move on. You will need more time in RC. I found CR to be in the middle as far as the time consumption goes. My 2 cents

OMG!!! this staring in SC when all seems right is really a big issue.
I will agree that clicking answers at random towards the end must be the issue for the verbal score. It is all about pacing. I messed my first GMAT as I had clicked my verbal Qs towards the end without even reading the choices. Also, at times I wonder what is the best for SC. IMO GMAT SCs mostly cover 2 or 3 errors and at times all seem right. OG is far easier as the errors are clearly visible. IMO GMAT SCs are far different. I dont know how to go about them. SCs have been giving me a tough time |

nitya34,
can u please tell me what extra are you studying for the second time?? i am also planning to give test again.i think august end....but have to take the exam date... gud luck for ur exam.... thanks all for the suggestions... i think you are right...as i have to work on increasing my speed in verbal...and very rightly pointed out by ssky regarding the relation between staring the question and confusion in answering the question... i will definitely try to avoid that kinda scenarios.. also, can anyone please tell me by what time should i give the paper, so that i can apply for colleges for july 2009 session? |
