Question Is GRE everything ? Will it do?

    Dear all,

How are you? I did extremely poor in GRE (380v+680m)=1060. I had a very tough extra math section[that was not evaluated i hope as where I could not ans more than 18 in 45 min] @ the beginning, it deteriorate my mental smoothness to continue the exam but I found my verbal & later math[that they counted] section quite easy. I had this mishap? I am quite in dilemma. Sud I apply this year or retake the GRE and apply next year? Will other things make up my low GRE score? Please have a look.

    My short Biodata --
    GPA- 3.71/4.00
    Class Rank - 2nd
    GRE- 1060

You should definitely re-take the GRE because otherwise the GRE cutoff might be stopping you from being considered at a lot of schools.

I did not have GRE score at the time I applied to Grad School, but I still got the admission from some school raking about 60-70 in my major.

You have an awesome profile apart from your GRE score. While most univs in europe, canada and a few in US like MIT, donot need GRE scores, most of the american univs do. GRE scores are just used to screen out applicants at an initial stage. So its possible that even before the committee get to have a look at your profile, you might get filtered out by some orderly coz u dont meet the gre cutoffs or "expectations"

Bottomline-With your profile, you deserve to study at the best places in US. If possible retake your gre, and explain your first attempt (very) briefly in your sop. With your potential, it shouldn't be a problem to notch up a decent score.

Your verbal score may be problematic for many US institutions.

What type of program are you applying for?

If you are applying to super popular schools, you will probably be eliminated by the score alone. Many schools take other items into consideration during review: your personal statement, GPA, letters of recommendation, work experience, and accomplishments.

I believe there are programs you can still apply to for Fall 2008. Check with the institutions you plan on submitting applications to and make sure they'll accept GRE test scores from Jan/Feb 2008. If they do, you should send your application in as soon as possible and then follow with new GRE scores. Designate on the application that you intend to take the GRE shortly.

Retake the GRE. Study now and study smart. You can do it!

    Dear All,
Thanks to you all. I took the gre & now its 500 in verbal & maths 770. Is there any effect of my poor score of last one? Again I am in a score trap for Toefl its Listening 25 Speaking 24 Writing 24 but Reading 16!!! I didn't answered the extra two last passages but they counted the last two. Any way is TOEFL score that much important ? My one is 89 but in reading its 16!!!
    Best wishes to you all.
