Admission to MS mathematics, MS statistics

    Hi Guys

How difficult is it to get into MS program in mathematics and MS in statistics?
    My profile is as followed:
BA from a small (not well known) liberal arts school: Double major Math, Economics, minor information science. GPA 3.5 overall. Math GPA (not sure, but close to 4.0 since I got all A, only 1 B+ in optimization). Taken courses up to real analysis and point-set topology.
Other relevent courses: Ph.D level probability and statistics, 3 econometric courses from economics Ph.d program (top 40 maybe) (3 As, 1 B).

GRE: 800Q, 450V. No subject test

I applied to 2 top 5 and 1 top 10 programs. I had the impression that M.S program in mathematics or statistics would not be too hard to get in as long as you are qualified, so I only applied to 3 of them. But now, after 5 weeks, I haven't heard anything and also find out that it is also quite competitive to get in ( in one of the department I applied to, there are about 100 applications for 15 to 20 spots) I am freaking out.

Sounds like UF's statistics program, except there are more applicants.

The problem, as you say, is that you applied to top programs, which are even more competitive since they are more likely to offer funding to MS students. And some of these top schools like UF will not offer admission unless they have funding available, so they are extremely competitive. (In the case of UF, it seems as if their number one priority for MS admissions is getting TAs for their undergrad courses.)

But now, after 5 weeks, I haven't heard anything
If you haven't already, you may want to check out TheGradCafe. Since April 15th is approaching, it wouldn't hurt to contact the departments to inquire about your status.

Actually, the programs that I applied to generally do not offer funding to MA students and I will probably end up paying tuition. That's why at the beginning, I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to get in

BTW, some admit rates from Petersons.com:

petersons.com statistics "Student Statistics:" - Google Search

Even FSU (which is outside of the top 10) is only showing a 15 percent admission rate:
Florida State University, Department of Statistics - Program Virtual Campus

UNC seems a lot easier, with apparently a 95 percent admission rate (which is hard to believe and may be wrong):
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Mathematics and Statistics - Program Virtual Campus

BTW, UNC's admission deadline without aid was March 31st:
Department of Statistics & Operations Research - Graduate Admissions for Statistics

Maybe they will still accept your application if you inquire with them by phone tomorrow, though I doubt it due to delays in GRE score reporting.

In any case, you may want to look into schools with Spring admission, e.g. Iowa State on the ambitious side, or rolling admissions.
