MA in Communications Profile Evaluation! Thank You!
Hello!
I haven't seen much people going after Masters in communication or journalism here but if you are lurking around, please comment my profile and help me with school selection and any advice. Everybody else is also welcome. Undergraduate: American university in my home country, considered one of the best schools in the country. One year fellowship at a top US liberal arts college, particularly strong in communication. CGPA: 3.3, Journalism Major: ~3.5, Politics major: ~3.5 (using the US system), State exam in Journalism: 5,26 out of 6 (according to WES, this is equal to an A) Communication courses: 3 different intro courses in reporting (B's), Editting (A), Media Law and Ethics (B+), Design (A), Advanced Design (A), Cinema Production (B+), Photojournalism (B-), Media and the Millitary (A), TV Reporting (B+), Internship (A). PoliSci Courses: About a dozen, also 4 history and 4 anthropology classes. An intership too. Mostly A's and B's. Internships: In a leading publishing house in the country, publishing over a dozen magazine titles. A full-time one semester internship in a leading US political think-tank. Research: During the internship in the think-tank. Several published articles on politics and media in my home country. A project on minorities involving substantial research and field work. Research interests: Race and Minorities in the media, Reporting during millitary/ethnic conflict, Politics and the media, New Media, Alternative media, Interactive and multimedia communication, Visual communication "Instructing" experience: Organized educational seminars in photography gathering over 100 students, bringing lectures and practice sessions. Supervised and advised over a dozen projects conducted by the participants in the seminars - from covering minority and social issues to art a portrait photography. Dealt with issues of media ethics and guided the participants when neccessary. The project finnished with 3 exhibitions in two cities. Awards: 1-year study abroad funded by a big foundation. Work Experience: Continued working for the publishing house I interned (1 yr), freelancing as a web/print designer and photographer (3 yrs to present), currently starting work on an EU-funded project. Additionally, I was a photo editor for a major student publication in my university, an assistant photo editor for one of the best student newspapers in US (Pacemaker awards and all), webmaster and radio producer in a student station. letter of reference: 2 communication professors (one graduated in Columbia Univ., former Bureau Chief of a large international network, one from a photo&design professor graduated in Syracuse). I need to decide on the third - either an additional professor who knows me not that good (Northwestern) or my former boss at the publishing house who will write a great letter of reference. GRE: I will need to go through that. One month left for studying. I hope about 650V, 5 AWA, 750+Q. I will be able to waive TOEFL. Concerns: GPA Universities: I am generally restricted to Midwest due to several reasons. I'm thinking of UW-Madison, Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, Northern Illinois, Urbana, DePaul. Funding should also be a must and not an option. Any suggestions are welcome! I would appreciate any comments! Last edited by Ninevah : 2009 September 12th at 05:09 PM.
