PhD in CS. CMU proposition vs chances for MIT and Berkley.

Hi everyone,
I'm currently applying for a CS PhD program for Fall 2010.
Here is the link to my profile:
http://www.urch.com/forums/graduate-...y-profile.html (Please evaluate my profile.)

I've recently had a visit to Carnegie Mellon University (ECE department, but they are doing CS stuff), and the prof. made a proposition for admission to their group right now (even before other applicants will finish their applications). But the tricky part that he wants me not to apply to other top Universities like MIT and Berkley.
It's like a deal - he is not searching for other applicants and I'm not searching for other schools.

CMU is #4 University for this program I think, and I was pretty satisfied with what I saw in their lab. But I still think I can try other Universities in my list.

What do you think: is it better to get this safe option or take my chances to other Universities too?

hmmm, the main question, how he is going to know that you applied not only to CMU?

The short answer - there is no way for him to be sure . It is an ethical problem for me to say "yes" for sure while I'm not that sure.

I'm not sure how ethical is from this professor's part to offer you such a deal. I would say yes to his offer but still apply to a couple more places in case something goes wrong in his offer. Anyway, make sure he doesn't read this forum

I would apply to the other programs. It's not right for him to ask that of you. Why would he do that? I'm sure he could find another qualified applicant if you decided to go elsewhere. And what if something falls through on his end, or he changes his mind because he just found somebody else he preferred? Where does that put you? Don't risk it.

What a sweet catch
It depends on how bad you need to get admitted at (MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley). If you don't have any hard feelings towards giving up #1 schools then take the CMU.
