Academic Job Prospects for Various Subjects
Hello. I am looking for data or statistics that would let me compare Ph.D. subjects based on one's prospects for academic jobs.
I suspect strongly that it is much easier to get an academic job in theoretical economics than in, for example, theoretical physics. The physicists, even the ones who become famous and are considered among the best in the world, tend to do years of post-docs and temporary research jobs before they get an assistant professor job. They typically have a long list of publications before they get their first tenure track job. In economics, I hear about people who get assistant professor jobs at high ranked departments when they have zero publications. I'm looking for articles, statistics, or anything that would provide insight regarding how the different Ph.D. subjects compare in the academic job prospects, quantitatively. That would include math, statistics, operations research, business, finance, economics, sciences, other social sciences, humanities, or anything else for which this type of quantitative comparison is available. If you know of anything relevant please post a link or reference to it. |
