    Applying for Econ Masters

    Hey Guys,

I want to know what my prospects are of getting accepted at LSE MSc Econ or the Econ MPhil at Oxford or Cambridge. What about Toulouse or Barcelona GSE, would they be easier/harder to get into? Also I'm more leaning towards micro than macro, which of these are more micro oriented?

I'm currently in a top Canadian University.

3.52 GPA. 3.9 in my Econ major.

Haven't taken much math classes, I wasted a lot of credits taking philosophy and psych courses in my first year and regret not taking more math classes. Only took Calc I and II (got an A and B+). Intro Stats (B+). I plan on taking Calc III and proof based Linear Algebra before I graduate.

In my Econ courses: Intermediate Micro (A-), Intermediate Macro (B+), Intro Game Theory (A+), Managerial Econ (A+), Economic Development (A+), Econometrics (A+), Economics of Crime (A).

Will Take: Industrial Organization I and II, Intermediate Micro II (Game Theory), International Trade, Advanced Econometrics and Mathematical Economics. I expect to get in the A range in all of them.

Secured letters of reference from my Econometrics prof and my Development prof, I ranked first in both classes.

I'm concerned that I don't have much math classes though, would that seriously hinder my chances?

Currently preparing for GRE, what would be an appropriate score that I should aim for?

Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You should be okay provided next year is not signifiantly different than this year. You have a profile similar to mine, and I was admitted this year at a couple of the programs you've meantioned. Why aren't you taking advanced Micro/Macro?

I should also point out that UBC and UofT are comparable choices with a smaller price tag.

GreenMan thanks for your input, glad to hear that I have a chance. Congratulations on your admittance, which program did you end up choosing in the end?

Advanced Micro/Macro have Mathematical Econ as a pre-req, but because of course availability I will end up having to take Math Econ in my final semester and will not have the chance of taking Advanced Micro/Macro.

I'll definitely be applying to UBC and UofT as well, they definitely have very strong programs. But I think in terms of placement into top ten PhD programs LSE does a better job, so the trade off is worth it for me since my plan is to ultimately get into a top PhD program.
