Colorodo School of Mines is considered the best by many people. I have also heard Texas A&M and UT-Austin mentioned as being among the best. It's very important to get into a good petroleum engineering schools. The best ones have relationships with companies and will help you with job placement. It's not a huge industry (not yet at least), but it's certainly a very high paying one. There are several lists that exist, but here is a list of the top petroleum engineering schools in the US. It will give you a good idea of what the top schools are as well as general information about petroleum engineering. Both of the schools geosenior mentioned are on the list as well. However the demand for petrol is not going to decrease any time soon... the crude business is here to stay for a long time. Along with Colorado school of mines & Texas A&M, I also recommend University of Tulsa as among the best programs available for pursuing this particular major.
