    Re: preparing url or webpage

Although it's pretty easy to get a site up these days, I don't think universities expect everybody to have their own domain with a site. I think the idea is that maybe some people have a site with their résumé or achievements on it, and perhaps they're interested in that.

If you do want to have your own space on the web, check with your undergraduate university. They may allow you to have a page on their site somewhere. Otherwise, it's the usual suspects--www.geocities.com, for example.

Yeah...I think making a personal website and putting the abstracts of all papers/publications and your resume makes a statement.

You can always get a sub server (1-2mb webspace) on the college website server. For example, something like (www.xxx.edu/tans)

    Re: preparing url or webpage

    Hey tans,
I would suggest you start a blog. (Web+log = blog) It requires minimal expertise and best of all, it looks professional and clutter free. It is also easy to maintain. To start with I'd recommend http://www.blogger.com - an enterprise which was bought by google. You would get a domain name like: http://tans.blogspot.com or anything else you may wish. Right after you sign up for free, you get a fabulous array of templates to choose from, and your own unlimited space for any kind of writing (Resumé, professional comments, observations etc.)
    Examples can be seen here:
    http://onemillionfootnotes.blogspot.com/
    http://dotlingo.blogspot.com/

There is one drawback however, you can't post any sort of files other than your own writing, but it is a great, easy and free way to showcase your professional interests, hobbies, creative writing and thoughts.

Some more fine examples where professionals maintain a blog as a creative and business outlet:

    Re: preparing url or webpage

UCB and MIT's website is the best among all univs and they regularly change the style. Even profs and students maintain excellent homepages there. I guess having good web-designing skills might be an added advantage if applying to berkeley or MIT!!!

    Re: preparing url or webpage

But not mentioning a webpage that contains a summary of important academic stuff (like papers/projects/thesis etc.) will seriously reduce the chances of getting an admit into top univs like Berkeley and Stanford.
