Help Econ Phd decision Europe
Hej guys, I have been following the discussion here very closely thus far
I was wondering if any of you great future econ Ph.D.'s could give me some advice. I have two offers one from London Business School (Econ Phd) with full funding and one from the Graduate institute of Internationl studies (HEI) in Geneva for a Ph.D in international economics. What do people think about those two schools respectively ? Moreover LBS made me an "explosive" offer, that means they offered me unconditional full funding for 4 years, but i have to reply to them by march 16th. So can people comment on the schools respective reputation and possible job prospects ? I know that HEI as a record of placing at least 2 graduates per year at the IMF. DO you guys think LBS could do the same thing for me ? Thanks for your advice in advance |

Re: Help Econ Phd decision Europe
I think the LBS could work for you. It's hard to pass up a good funding offer like that. I don't know this, but it's possible that the LBS doesn't place as many students at the IMF because they have better offers or more flexible offers elsewhere. I think it's real hard to be sure what kind of job you want in 4 years. You may have a very different outlook about employment.
4 years of funding means you won't have to worry or stress about the money aspects. That may enable you to do the kind of high quality work that can make anything happen. I think the LBS may open the door to being a business prof at some top schools and the option of working at IMF, world bank, etc. Just depends on your research interests (and what location (us, europe) you want to work in). I'm not qualified to comment on respective reputations. It just seems to me that all things equal, you will have more opportunity and no funding woes at the LBS. |

LBS is a very nice upmarket niche PhD. I know someone who is doing their PhD there. They also have great industry contacts so if thats your goal - go for it. I haven't heard of HEI, but since a good friend of mine is doing his Econ PhD in Monetary there, LBS I have heard of

Re: Help Econ Phd decision Europe
I know that LBS has in general a very high reputation (as a business school) but if Geneva has for sure a very good record in placing students in IMF and if this is what you want, then the answer is simple.
Congratulations for both offers !!!! LBS with full financial aid? What about Geneva?

Re: Help Econ Phd decision Europe
Hej
many thanks for your insight on Europes culture... After all I did have an interview at the LBS a couple of weeks ago, but in any case you never reallyget the true story when you talk to people while you are there..... Vinny the pooh, what do you mean europes culture is different ? Isnt it true that these advanced micro/macro/econometrics classes are insanly difficult ? According to LBS i will have to take te advanced micro class at the LSE and the macro class at UCL....... Gstergia... Dont know about funding in Geneva yet.... going there to visit on tuesday and I might know more by then..... In any case thanks for the responses guys |
