What are my chances for a masters or phd. in economics (Plse advise)

    Hey guys

I am a double major in economics and business administration with a minor in mathematics from a second tier liberal arts school in the midwest. I was wondering what the odds are for getting into a second or third tier economics graduate program on full aid. My GPA 3.2 /4 is not impressive but we have a strenuous curriculum. Some call my place the Harvard of the midwest. I have successfully resrached and presented papers at regional conferences on financial crisises, the CAPM model and its application to the Indian stock exchange and many topics on the WTO. Supposing I get a GRE Quant of 780 do you think I still have a chance at schools like:
    Arizona State
    Florida International
    University of Alabama
    University of Ohio
    University of Kentucky

    Thanks
    Roman

Your profile seems to me very strong and if you couple it with some good letter of recommendation and a focused SOP then I say you are in in ALL these schools!

You stand a good chance of being admitted to those schools. You may want to try one or two more schools higher in the rankings just to see how it goes, especially if you have gone through a 'strenuous curriculum'.

I also think your chances are good if your curriculum is strenuous and the last 2 years are stronger than your first 2 years of college. Presenting at conferences are a plus especially if the professors can write you very strong letter of recommendations. You can reference mosfro's profile (The Official Profile & Stats Thread!!), even though your profile seems stronger, but so far I know mosfro has similar GPA and got into Texas A&M with full aid, waiting for a few other schools.

On the other hand, you probably want to explain why your GPA is relatively low in your SOP; 3.2/4 is not very impressive even if the curriculum is stenuous.

btw, doesn't Harvard practice grade inflation ?

I guess, if governor of Chukotka is one of your relatives - you should not be bothered by this stuff.
