Hello gopalp,
Welcome to TestMagic!
Congrats on being admitted to Cornell!
If I am not mistaken, davenbacker & bubobi are going to Cornell this fall. Contact them for more information.
Good luck!
P.S.:
It's Berkeley and not Berkley.![]()
I am joining the M.Eng at Cornell this fall of 2005 together. Does anybody on this forum has any info on
1) Whether the one year OPT is available after we pass out since it is a one year program
2) What chances do I have for a PhD at a good school after I come out of the program in computer science. (Cornell, MIT, Harvard, Berkley, Stanford or CMU)
3) Any idea on how much we get per month as RA’s and TA’s while doing a PhD in computer science at a good school?
Thanks Guys..![]()

I have heard that MEng from Cornell is a terminating degree. I think gforce knows better than me, so it would be the best to contact him.
As far as I understand, a terminating degree means what you mentioned. Also Anand does a terminating degree mean that it would be of no use for a Phd.
Hey, congrats! As someone mentioned, I'll be there too. Maybe I'll see you there!
I visited the program last week & talked with Dr. Bailey, who runs the M.Eng. program. It is advertised as a terminal degree, but according to Dr. Bailey, the program is flexible enough to help towards a PhD. You can take just about any advanced/technical classes you'd like, and I'm guessing you can turn the project requirement in to sort of a mini thesis. IIRC, he said that of last year's M.Eng. students, 1 got in to Stanford's PhD program, 1 to MIT, and 1 to Cornell. (And I think he said that they average about 1 student/year going from M.Eng. to PhD) Most of the students (re)enter the workforce, so for ~100 students in the program those odds aren't too bad, in my opinion. That's what I'm hoping to do, kick butt at the M.Eng. program and turn that in to a top-notch PhD admit :-)
He also mentioned that the stipend for their PhD students is ~27k, which is pretty liveable. Unfortunately, there isn't much help avaiable for M.Eng. students.
Oh, I've already been arranging university housing, etc... if you plan to get an apartment off campus, I'd suggest College Town... an apt there will be closer than the university ones (like Maplewood, where I'll be). If you opt for university housing, Maplewood apartments are pretty decent. I didn't see Schuyler house (dorms), but the distance from Upson hall was enough to put me off.
Anyway, feel free to PM me if you have any questions, etc. Go Big Red!!![]()
kewl, I'll probably see U guys there too, I 'll start my M.Eng in the Fall as well, but I won't be living in CollegeTown (the prices are literally insane for housing). PRobably Maplewood or Noyles community Centre area....
I have noticed the full course listing hasn't come out for next year, and I already took most of their M.Eng courses in 4th yr....wondering if I should still go.... I don't wanna redo courses again just for an M.Eng degree when I;m paying $31k, I don't even wanna think how much that is in Canadian $$'s
getting some tuition waiver/discounts would help.....![]()
