Keep in mind the main for contacting professors: if you don't have anything specific to tell or ask them, it's better not to contact them at all!!! So, if you've done work on their research interests, and you'd like to discuss that and the possibility of a TA or RA concerning that topic, then it's a good idea to contact them. Also, if you have a research topic and you want to ask them about advising you on it, you can contact them. If you just want to know your chances of getting in, based on your GPA, GRE, etc., you should contact the graduate adviser or department admissions coordinator; professors shouldn't answer e-mails like these, and most of them won't... So, think before you write, it can ruin your reputation at a certain university if you don't go about it in the right way. GOOD LUCK!!

No, I've more or less decided not to contact professors personally. I might contact one or two whose books I've read and used for research papers, but I'm not sure yet, I'd have to have a pretty good idea of what to ask them first. I'm doing literature, so there aren't too many RA possibilities, it's more TA stuff, and I'm hoping to get full funding during the first year so that I will only need to look for a TA for the second year, and once you're there, you can just ask.

Thanks

Thanks a lot to everyone for their inputs. I knew I should have posted my profile AFTER getting a GRE score..(this was evident from the very few replies i got on that thread.)

I realised that my profile is pretty ok anyway, and working on the GRE is my best bet. I' m giving it my all. Will definitely hit a competent score.

Will be back with the scores.

All the best, people.

The reason i posted before getting scores is to get a rough projection as to the kind of colleges i can submit to ETS for the free score sending.
