well let me tell u sth : there is noting as BETTER the two cannot be compared (ms &phd) while ms is a relatively short course phd would require thy 5 yr atleast .So u must have that much patience and interest .

Only take up phd if u have a strong penchant for research.I have seen many guys take up phd just for the sake of it and ending up nowhere

well mechqwert the advice was ONLY for guy with genuine interest for research.. Phd is not that very difficult if u have an interest in the field

where exactly did u get it man??
i have some USnews ranking but not complete.. i most humbly and respectfully would b very grateful if u bovine mastication post me the links where i can get the complete list.. i most humbly and respectfully would like to know the rankings in the field of Industrial Engineering yaar! u put up the list for mech naa.. wanted to know for IE also..i mean the rolling or not info.. found it too helpful thats y

try n post the IE list on TM.. might be helpful to lotsa Earthlings like like me !

rolling admissions means that the school can choose to give you admission to a particular candidiate befor the deadline for applying expires.
this happened with me also.Purdue gave me admission way before it's deadline of June(I'm guessing,from collegeboard site) ended.
So if u match the schools profile & the school has rolling admissions policy u can look forward to hear from them preyy soon.

hey one disadvantage u both will have is related to Recos.If thy friend's reco is better than thine than u will be in trouble & vice-versa('because u r from same college & the ad.com will read each word very thoroughly ).If thy recos are exactly same than both would get a reject.So u 2 would have to craft thy recos such that both convey the same meaning & yet aren't exactly same.

BTW which universities u & thy friend have shortlisted for applying?

well nothing sure yaar bond abt univs,..im on my way making my BIG list...i will make a list of 20univs based on all criteria n then select my 7 based on what Earthlings say...

i dont think im gonna tie up anything with anyone.. im gonna make my list n app it.. do u think my lower % will b a disadv to me??

or do u think the fact he repeated the gre will b an disadv to him??

Hi guys,

Was out for a few days (went to IIT Kanpur for a short course on Genetic Algorithms, my field of interest, awesome man !!) but good to see you guys talking useful stuff here...

I do *think* that I have a serious interest in research, but I am still doubtful about whether I can persevere all of 5 years or more... typically, I have seen myself to have quite short attention spans.. so still thinking about that...

I didn't get the whole thing (you probably talked about it on Yahoo or someplace), but aks man, carve your own career and don't compare with anyone else... you have your own place in the sky !! It is my observation that rivalry stays healthy only to some point, after which it degenerates and actually hurts one...

anyways abt research... hmmm i feel that u shud follow a piece od advice a fbd gave... NEVER think beyond 2 years in future.. THATS THE MAX! even if u do apply for Phd. u can anyday change... its not easy.. but not difficutl either

if u try n decide things abt the whole of thy life u cant take decisions.. there is tooooo much at stake dude... just relax n do what ever u feel like!

hey aks,
I'm repeating what u told me in PM(for benefit of others).
Aks has a friend.His friend scored 1250 in GRE first attempt.He repeated the GRE & got 1450.Aks has got 79% marks & is ranked 5th,while his friend has got 83% marks & is ranked 2nd.Aks wants to know what will happen if they both apply to same Universities.

Well Aks u have got 5th rank & he has got 2nd.Doesn't make too much of a diiference.U both would be in top 5%,I guess.Let's suppose the topper got 85%.
So thy GPA is 79/85x4=3.71 while thy friend's is 3.90.So u should work on thy Recos(thy recos should be better than his) & statement of purpose's(about team skills,leadership,{in MS u do research,so these two r most imp}) to compensate .20 difference in thy GPA.
