Please evaluate my chances.

Hi everyone,

I'm new in here . Please rate my profile, and let me know where i could apply for MS EE for Fall '06. I am writing the TOEFL and GRE this Aug, and looking for a 1350+ in GRE, and 270+ in TOEFL.
Degree: B. E. in EE (with Distinction) from UVCE, Bangalore University.
CGPA: 70.7 % (Overall), and 74.3 % (last 2 semesters)
Research: (1 year) VLSI programme at MSRSAS, and (0.5 year) worked on FPGAs at MSRSAS, Bangalore.
Senior Thesis: Designed and developed simulation system for an avionics communication protocol at National Aerospace Labs, Bangalore
Publications: None
Prof. Exp: Working on Nortel's Wireless Network switches for 1 year.
Managed my own computers and networking business for 3 years.
Desired field of graduate study: MS in EE (with preferred focus as Power Engineering / Power Electronics)
statement of purpose: Good. Have highlighted my interest in research in Energy and Power systems, and also awards and recognitions.
Recos: 3 Ph.D's, 1 Head of Dept.

I am looking at Univs like Virginia Tech, Drexel, UT Austin, UIUC, and UT Arlington. Please indicate if i need to ramp up/down the rank of univs to apply to. Unquestionably it would be ideal if I can get into the top 10 univs.

I have this current list of universities with good ECE departments. Some of them have very good Power engineering programs, and some VLSI programs. So I have applied for the stronger program at the respective college. I am game for either depending on the ranking of the college that admits.

Ambitious
1. Georgia Tech
2. UIUC
3. Stanford
4. UC Berkeley
5. Austin
6. Texas, A & M

Manageable

1. Virginia Tech
2. University of Southern CA, Viterbi
3. UMich, Ann Arbor
4. Ohio State
5. UC Irvine
6. Minnesota, Twin cities.

Safe list

1. University of Missouri, Columbia
2. North Carolina State
3. Wisconsin, Madison
4. UT Arlington
5. Drexel
6. Northern Illinois.

Hey aks, added you to the yahoo messenger... I think you should go through the previous posts abt prof letting before doing the thing... I can give you some files I have, nice ones

Mechqwert, hows the prep going? mehnat karlo beta...

Swaroop, I think it would be better if you post a new thread of your own, that way you would get many replies from all, not just us... i think your profile is pretty good to get into some top univ... the list you have made is quite okay, although you can afford to cut down from your safe list... are you going to app to so many?

Although I would warn against just using the rankings for making these lists... I hope you have not done that, and you have seen the websites and research etc with each univ before you decided on these...

best,
Attraxion.

Moving my previous post to a new thread...

Thanks for the quick reply attraxion. I'll shift my maiden post to a new thread. Although my list reads a bit long, I am finally going to choose only 10, with lesser 'Ambitious' list univs in the final cut.

I have spent the entirety of last 2 months researching the universities' sites, and talking to people, and have finally arrived at this list.

What I am hoping from this post is suggestions/recommendations for more colleges in the top 20, best for Power Engineering under ECE with a rough estimate of my chances of getting an admit.

Hi all,
I want to add here that the GRE & GMAT scores only signify the clusters of Universities u can apply to(with more than 50% chance of getting an admit).e.g.- 1400 & above in GRE-Top Tier ie TOP 25
1250-1400-Second Tier-ie Top25-50
1100-1250-Third Tier-ie Top50-75
1100 & below-Fourth Tier-ie Top 75-100
Again the scores & the classification r general(although there can be xceptions like my relative(IITian) getting a 1150 & getting into
U Minn[ 25th ranked] .Getting a low score in a particular slab means u would get an admit in the bottom universities in that slab.e.g getting a 1400 would get u admit in the 17-25 universities(greater probability) but u can also apply to Top 5-17 also.

Hey attraxion,
I have added u to my Yahoo Messenger.
@Swaroop,Have u completed thy BE & working somewhere?('because u have written u have managed thy Comp. biz for 3 yrs.)
So u want to go to Power Engr.hmm... G Tech is the World's no.1 in power Engr.1350 in GRE is not enough for Power Engr. in G Tech.
So first get a GRE score & then identify the cluster of Universities acc. to thy Score.

Hi Bond,
I am a 2004 EE grad. I am working in the wireless networking domain for the past 1 year. This has been my first proper job. The 3 years of experience building, selling and troubleshooting PC's was during my undergrad years. I do not count this as professional experience.

Will get my GRE scores and get back
