Hi,
For those waiting for Duke admissions let me give you a piece of infomation for you since I just got my master there. Duke has send admissions to the people who is considered for full funding. According to some of my Phd friends at Duke not everybody gets the same money. For example, those who got admission in january are the most preferred candidates and they are getting something about 24000 per year plus tuition waiver. The people who got admission on February is going to get about 17000 per year plus tuition waiver. So the people still waiting to hear from Duke are the ones that the department consider as not as good choices as the one they already admit and it is high probably that they will not offer much money and Duke is an expesinve school. I hope this is useful for you guys |

$17000 plus tuition waiver doesn't seem like such a bad offer. Since Duke fully funds every PhD student (yes, even English and History grad students get paid to go...), there's no danger of being unfunded. So, sure, the extra $7000 would be nice, but if it actually is the case that those who hear just a little bit later receive a bit less money, I wouldn't be too worried. In particular, Durham isn't all that expensive of a place to live--I lived there on far less than $17000 a year not long ago.
Now, perhaps this rumor isn't true, in which case we've learned nothing, but that goes without saying. Good luck to those who haven't heard yet... |

Maybe I wasn't clear. The 17000 thousand are for the people already accepted at Duke in the second round about the second week of February. For those still waiting they will get less money and in some cases just the tuition waiver. Your only hope is that the high refusal rate from many students to come to Duke last year would repeat this year.

Well, my situation before coming to Duke was not the normal situation for must of the guys. In principle I had been outside academia for 6 year. Moreover my bachelor degree was in business from a mexican university. The only good thing is that I had a great GPA, a 253 toefl score, an a 780 in the quant part of the GRE. Besides I had the Fulbright scholarship so probably that is why I got admission at Duke.
About the MA I can tell that it works better as a professional degree than a preparation for a PhD since there are not particular Master Econ courses usually you take the same courses as the undergrads. About my future plans well I have been admitted at UC Davis but still I am wating for some other places. |
