Econ2006 radiates success.
I used to live in Central Square in Cambridge a few years ago (it's the T stop between Harvard and MIT). My studio was $1000, and that seemed about average for that area. As econgeek06 mentioned, you can probably find something cheaper in East Cambridge (closer to MIT), but the area can be quite sketchy.

If you decide to go the MIT route, my advice would be to live in a suburb such as Somerville, Watertown, Waltham, etc., and just take the bus or T to school. The average rent should be cheaper, and the commute isn't bad at all.
