Moving with a spouse/partner/family?

Yeah, Boston and NYC should have pretty good job opportunities in most fields. On the other hand, my best option so far is in Providence, RI. My partner's A.B. is in English, and she'll be primarily looking for writing/editing work. I'm not sure that that will be easy to find in Providence. Her current job is in Boston, which is only an hour from Providence, so we're trying to decide if that commute would work for either of us on a daily basis.

Does anyone know if it's fairly easy to get a job at a uni where your spouse/partner is a student? She has experience in a higher ed setting, so I'm hoping that, as a last resort, she'll be able to find a job at whichever school I attend.

econgeek: That would probably depend on a lot of factors. If your SO was, say, someone looking for work in a lab of some sort, that would probably be no problem. There might be jobs in the writing/editing fields--does Brown have a decently sized university press?

One positive is that if you ask around your department, making sure they know you're interested, they might have some leads for her. On the other hand, an hour-long commute each way to grad school sounds like a really bad idea...

An hour long commute is a pain, but it is doable. My SO is studying at Stanford and I commute up to SF everyday. Door to door, the commute is about 3 hours a day but luckily half of that is on the train so I am able to work or read. How is the public transportation between Boston and RI? Perhaps you can split the difference and live someplace in the middle after your first year or two.

Econgeek: Many universities actually help with these matters - they have programs to help spouses of faculty and graduate students find jobs. You should see if your school provides these services. Your partner may not find what she's looking for immediately - but with some time and familiarity with the area, she'll find something.
