No news is bad news?
I see people getting admits from UCLA, UCSD and Boston U but I haven't received anything. Guess no news is bad news.
Is there really a pattern that admtis get emails first and rejects get either email or snail mail later? |

Not sure about the pattern. I am still waiting on a couple schools from which others have heard positive things.
If schools know they are going to reject an applicant the right thing to do seems like notifying them asap so they can get on with their lives. |

Not necessarily true. I was admitted to a program about a month after the first acceptance entry on gradcafe for that dept. That also happens to some people I know too.

yes, I would agree with TJK. No news is no news. Even though if you know of some schools which have sent the bulk of their admits out, no news isn't too positive.
as for me always when I got accepted I was notified quite early. |

UCLA accepts over 100 people for Econ PhD?
I thought the number was around 20-30 per school, 40 max. I had no idea some grad intakes are so large. Anyone know the average number of admits per school? Congrats, Antichron! You have amazing achievements! Care to share your profile? |

No news is not the end of the world, but it is definitely bad news. If lots of people are receiving offers by e-mail and you are not I guess you can't expect much that particular school anymore. I wish adcoms read Machiavelli.
"Severities should be dealt out all at once, so that their suddenness may give less offense; benefits ought to be handed ought drop by drop, so that they may be relished the more." |

I believe you may be confusing the number of admits with their target class size. While most schools tend to have the same target class size, 20-30, not all admit the same number of students. This has to do with a school's yield, which is the number of students that accept divided by the number of students admitted. Based on their historical yield schools know about how many students they need to admit to get their 20-30 students. The thing is that different schools have different yields, and so a place like Harvard can afford to admit 36/800 students because they know that roughly 2/3's of those students will attend. Meanwhile Minnesota has about a 36% yield historically, and thus, they tend to admit many more students.
