Being a Young PhD (mainly for economists)

Hi guys,

Just a quick question for you: for a person aiming at a career in economic policy oriented research (say at IMF, WB, etc..), which one do you think is more important?
  1. Graduating from a high ranked university at the age of 29 - 30
  2. Graduating from a low ranked university, study a foreign language, and graduate at 26 - 27 and perhaps acquire relevant experience
Notice the goal is not an academic career, but a non-academic one.

Look forward to your responses.

billmydland just joined TestMagic.
I think both are probably feasible. #2 certainly sounds more fun.

One of the best things you could do would be to look at the CVs of those who are currently at the WB, IMF, or whatever, and see what path they took. This is sort of a "revealed" measure of how these organizations hire people. (I don't know if that actually makes any sense, but I think econ people get the idea.)

Cheers,
Bill
