new user's thoughts
Hi Group: I am unsure if my last message made it through, as I replied to another strand. Maybe this will work (I am technically challenged).
I am writing to note that this forum is wonderful. The level of public good provisioning is great and I can only imagine what it would have done to help me in my limited choices when deciding to go to grad school in economics back in 1992. I found that some of you are considering Maryland. I want to highlight that it is a really good place. I spent 4 years in residence and the students are quite good and the faculty fantastic. You can do fine going to lower level schools like Wyoming and such too. Of course, I would rather have you join me here in Chicago so if you should have any questions in this regard please let me know. I will try to follow along and provide insights when I can. Best, John |

Hi Group: Yes, I am a professor at Chicago in the economics department. I am not trying to recruit anyone for next year, just trying to help agents in potential distress by providing information that can lead to optimal decisions. I am unsure if any other professors are looking over the site. My attention was attracted after a student here at UC--Steve--showed me the site and how some were making negative comments about UC and our program.
I am not here to make any remarks about those comments, rather I want to stress that it is great around UC. The value-added must be second to none for students. Though I must admit I have not been in residence at another top 20 school except Maryland. I received a personal message from TheBrothersKaramazov. I want to note that my visit to McMaster was fun and that UBC is a fine place. The experimental group here at UC is progressing nicely and I think most (all?) of my colleagues would agree that some combination of lab and field experiments are a useful way to learn about behavior. I noted that one of you might be at Pitt (or CMU). If so I will be in town next Friday for a seminar..stop by and say hello! Best, John |

OneMoreEcon: I have nothing but good things to say about UCF. Four nice years. Not to mention the fact that of my 150 job applications in 1996 they were one of only two places that gave me an interview at the meetings. Subsequently they gave me a fly out and hired me.
If UCF would not have taken a chance on me I would probably be a truck driver right now (along with my brother and father). Nothing wrong with that, just a different lifestyle than I have in the academy. Best, John |

Was it more difficult to get a job at Chicago after attending a school like Wyoming for your Ph.D? Was Wyoming your top choice? You went to a small school in the Wisconsin state schools system, correct, are you happy with your undergraduate and graduate expirience, or do you wish you had gone places more prestigious? Many of us are not going to elite schools, and many of us are, what advice do you have for those who are not who wish to have successful careers (ie, how did you do it)?
