vqlong radiates success.
If you are from Asia, you can join ADB, where you can get the same type of jobs as in World bank, but albeit with easier entry. There is also Latin America development bank.

Dyiwang...

Sorry to have unleashed such a torrent of discussion board wrath. I think you took it very admirably, though.

Also, excuse me if my estimation of junior bankers earnings was
understated. I agree with you its not worth really discussing. Also sorry about my incorrect understanding about you being in Chicago. Somehow I had that impression.

Edit: by the way, I think you're right that school will be less demanding hours wise, but I think it will be much more demanding intellectually and perhaps more stressful for this reason.

PCG: No need to apologize and there was no offense taken. Clearly my perception was skewed and I appreciate people on this forum (including you) providing their perspective. Since all of our perceptions are shaped by our surroudings and experience, it's really not a surprise that we have drastically different perceptions. I guess there is always the slight discomfort when we first realize that not everyone is exactly like ourselves. Most people probably have this realization in grade school, I clearly am a bit delayed in this process for whatever reason. I see from your signature that you will be at UCLA this fall. Econ is a small world, maybe one day we'll do research together. Cheers.

Not a problem man. Like I said, you've made your points quite clear and convincing. And I am more than happy to adjust my views while facing a convincing argument and seemingly reliable evidence. Where will you end up next year btw?

Oh me? Not an econ PhD applicant (for 2006 at least), but I'm working on econ. research as a field-based RA. So far it's been an interesting opportunity to travel and work for some profs doing very cool work, but I am a very borderline PhD candidate. If I do apply, it probably won't be till 2007 so I have time to:
a) Get back to the U.S. and take some more high level math courses
b) Get outstanding and detailed LORs (this will probably be the strongest area of my app)
c) Put some more distance between me and the first 2 years of undergrad

If not, then I probably will attend a less-rigorous MBA/MPP style program and end up working more towards the policy side (with the WB being a strong possibility there). Of course, all of this would have been a lot easier if I had actually started planning before getting to the end of undergrad, but the past is the past. Sunk costs and there's nothing I can do about it.

Love reading TM forums! The quality of discussion and people posting is definitely top-notch.

Good luck at Stanford next year!

And this is only for the weekdays, on the weekends I probably don't need to go to class and I can do more studying/socializing. And I can do problem sets outside. Maybe go to lake tahoe on a long weekend. I'm not saying that Ph.D econ will be a walk in the park for me and I plan to work hard. But it's all relative, and if you compare my forecast with my current schedule, I think I will appreciate the new life style a lot more.
That's very interesting, I was expecting to have about six or seven hours of sleep daily, but your schedule makes a lot of sense (though I'd add time for household chores). Perhaps I'll have to learn to manage my waking hours better, so that I need less of them.

Tahoe sounds really nice for those long weekends (but oh the guilt afterwards!)...

Good luck at Stanford, see ya at the Little Big Game!

Focus on the bright side, who said you can't do your problem sets at Tahoe? You can even argue that the environment stimulates braincells. You know, swim a little, do a couple of problem, swim a bit more, do another problems, take a nap, do another problem, eat a sandwhich, do another problem. Sleep for the night, wake up the next morning and do a problem while having your breakfast. Hang out with your friend(s) for a bit and repeat the process, then you'll be done!!!

Wow. Feels like it has been forever. Well, I just revisted some of the old posts and realized you were probably addressing me and I never responded. Apologies. Not sure if you will actually check this site these days. So in the interest of fair play (i.e. I try to reply to posts addressing me), I hope you will eventually make a lot of money (if that's what your heart desires). And of course, if you ever have more money than you can possibly spend, please let me know and I would happy to help you spend some of it .
