FYI, I am interested in moving on to the investment banking industry...(e.g. trading, IBA, quant)
but i am considering taking up the offer since it is only a 1 year program
why are u asking Vlsiguy?....are u going to UT also?
i understand the M.ENG can't lead one to PHD

Hey Derek,

No I will not be attending UofT, but I asked you because I know MEng is not enough to get into a Canadian PhD program... Since you plan to go into banking industry, i think an MEng would be perfect for you. The program is relatively short and you will gain some technical knowledge from the good courses offered at UofT...and you never know..if you ever want to have a technical job, this degree would certainly be useful..

Just curious....since ppl with bachelors apply to PHD in the states, would an M.ENG give an advantage when applying to PHD in the states?

I have a similar question. I'm thinking for applying for the Spring semester, and some universities only accept M.Eng applications during the Spring. Would an M.Eng degree allow me to continue to a Ph.D or transfer to an MS once admitted?

Azimuth, my profile is:
GPA = 3.89/4.00 (undergrad in ECE)
GRE = 780Q, 590V, 5.0/6.0A
I am currently finishing my Masters in ECE at U. Windsor (Canada). I have 2 IEEE conference publications..and a journal paper submission..

In most universities in Canada, an M.Eng degree doesnt allow you to continue to PhD studies... You will usually have get your MS first. Although I know a couple people going to Toronto straight into PhD (in ECE) from bachelors... As for transferring from MEng to MS, i dont know how that works or how easy it is... you should maybe talk to people at the respective university.

Derek:

I dont think having an MEng gives you an advantage in getting admission to PhD in the US.. Chances of admission would probably stay the same. Your GPA will be very important. The only advantage i could see would be a possible reduction in the course requirements once you are in a PhD program in the US..

Did you submit your GRE scores when you applied to the ECE department at UofT? I recall that they were optional, and hence I did not submit any scores (I did not take the test in the first place).

My GPA at the time of application was 3.84 (now after I graduated it is 3.88). I finished my BS in computer engineering in the UAE (United Arab Emirates). I don't know why I was rejected, was it maybe due to the fact that I applied late (close to the deadline)? I also bear the Canadian passport, does that have an effect on my chances? -- I did not take the TOEFL by the way.

No i did not submit my GRE scores to U of T. I took GRE because I am plannign to study in the US... I think you should have submitted a TOEFL score though. Wasn't it required on the application, if you did schooling outside of North America? Also, I think in recent times, U of T is unfortunately making admission more and more difficult for international students. That is my feeling anyways. I have a few Persian friends , who have told me that even some top students from schools like Sharif Inst. of Tech. in Iran are getting rejected by Toronto...but they are getting admission to schools of equal or better quality in the US. Hmmm... but it is really hard to say why you received a rejection, since you have a Canadian passport, and an excellent GPA.. Maybe it was related to your SOP or recommendations?
