When you're applying to 18 schools like me, you'll go crazy reading all the instructions. Preparing the applications is really a pain in the a*s. As it turns out, the marginal cost of submitting an additional application can easily exceed the benefit.

I don't know whether they are allowed to, but my recommenders did.

I thought otherwise. There is a high fixed and marginal costs for the first few apps. Consolidating all the details, requesting for transcripts, drafting the SOP, helping your recommenders with the reco, etc. Thereafter, the marginal cost for subsequent apps will fall siginificantly, mainly to customize for each schools.

But the financial costs to aply to 18 schools will break the bank, especially for an international student like me. I'm spending US$200 per school (fees, test scores, mailing packages). Applying to 18 schools is far too many for me. Anyway, I can't find 18 schools that I want to go to. So I'm limiting to around 8 schools.
