Admission to JBS MPhil without GRE ?

Hi

I have an excellent bachelor's degree from a good but not excellent European university. I want to apply to the Judge business school's MPhil management course.

Their webpage states that they "recommend applicants to take the GRE". Does anyone know if it there is a point in applying to the course without taking the GRE? I don't want to pay the application fee, fill out all the papers and get the recommendations just to have my application end up in a trash can because of the absence of a GRE score.

Does anyone have information about admission rates at the JBS Master programmes (not the MBA)?

Thanks in advance

JBS? Never heard of that school. What is the full name? I would check out their website if you can find them on the web and contact the school via E-mail. Good luck!

Sry, I thought the name was more well-known : Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK, http://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/

They state on their page that they will not answer enquiries about one's chances of admission per mail

Any help?

Don't worry, it's a very well known school. Perhaps you should say Cambridge though, rather than JBS.

Anyway, the website says: "We strongly advise applicants from non-UK institutions to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) general test."

Seems pretty clear to me; take the GRE. It is never a good idea to disregard instructions as clear as this when making an application. I'm not sure how much value there is in a discussion about whether not taking it will land your app in the "probably not competitive" pile or the "trash bin" pile.

From their standpoint, the attitude is probably "Well his grades are good but we have no idea what standards are like at that university. And contrary to instructions, he didn't take the GRE so we have no way of double checking the validity of these grades. Let's move onto someone whose credentials can be verified."

or

"If he was really keen on this program, he would have just taken the damn test. It was clearly indicated on the website that he should do this."

So you're applying to Cambridge. Hmmm..., it's interesting that an English university would ask their students to take a standardized exam from the United States. Don't they have their own standardized exam in England? If you want to know about your chances of admission, I would suggest that you contact people currently enrolling the school. The admission people should be able to help you get in touch with these people. I doubt it if many of these people would have taken the GRE. GRE is designed for American and Canadian universities. While it is a standardized test, it has no predictability of graduate school success whatsoever. American universities use it because there are no better standardized tests available in the US. The Educational Testing Service is currently trying to improve the GRE though.

Actually the GRE is used by lots of universities all across Europe, including many in the UK. It may be a more common requirement for Canadian and American universities, but it certainly is not exclusive to institutions in those two countries.

Hi

Thanks for all the answers. I don't want to take the GRE, since the GRE analogy questions aren't exactly easy for non-native English speakers and I am not really fond of having to learn all the vocabulary lists - I could imagine some more useful things to do in my free time

I'll try to get some contacts from people who have already applied to the school to find out if there is really no way to avoid the GRE.

If anybody has any more information, I would appreciate your help...
