    Hello,

I've completed my B. Tech in Biomedical engg. & wanted to pursue MS in BIomedical engg. My GPA is 3.7/4.0.

I wanted to apply for fall 2004.

    My GRE 1380(v-640, Q-740), TOEFL-260.

Please rate the univs. The program in all these univs. are equally good. I wanted to know in which one there is better chance of getting aid and also which one is the best.

    1. Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
    2. Case Western Reserve Univ. (Ohio).
    3. Georgia Institute of Technology
    4. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (NY)
    5. University of Connecticut.
    6. Boston University
    7. University of Masacchussets, Worcester.

I've mailed couple of proff. They responded by mailing that, "thank u for thy interest, apply for the program".

I didn't understand this as I ready mentioned that I've applied to the univ. What to ask for in the second mail. Also, what should I do if they don't reply.

Please heed me. This is very important!

    Thanks in advance
    Harsha

The best thing to do is to look at your desired univesity's faculty profiles and see what type of research or what their interests are in. And then research their interests and then ask them questions about their research. Make your inquiry more personal. Lord knows how many e-mails that they get that are impersonal and just say I have this GPA and GRE what are my chances of being accepted. If you have the same interests as a particular professor, then you should have a good chance by being accepted by that professor.

This is what I am doing.

Psyoutlaw i don't think admission into graduate school is in the professor's hands unless he happens to be the director of grad. admissions. Although by emailing professors with similar interest you just prove to the university how much you have thought about research and grad school, which will serve in your favor.

Most prof.'s don't bother reading emails by students who give them their bio data (gpa, GRE scores etc.) since they receive 100's of such email. Besides what can they do with this info. u have just provided them? They can't tell you whether you'll get accepted cause its not in their hands, they can't tell you if they will offer you an RA job because numbers mean nothing to them. What they will tell u is that you will probably need to take their course when u enroll and at the end of the semester they'll let u know about whether or not you're goin to be their RA. So in my opinion its a waste of time unless you have publications that are very similar to that professor and you know exactly what you want to do research in.

Vinay, don't convert your %age to GPA cause that will just make u look bad. I don't know what a 75% would be in the GPA system but i'd be too scared to convert it if i were you. Instead mention your ranking in class. But this is just my opinion!
