Hello everybody,

I'm a BTech final year student from India. Can anyone tell what are the kind of things top schools (say the top 20) look for while selecting students? I've got GRE score of 760Q 580V 4.5AWA and a TOEFL score of 213-270. I've a GPA of 9.8/10 and am ranked second in class. Are these scores considered to be very low? How much weightage are GRE scores given in the whole process of admission?

Regards
Karteek

Karteek... I believe noone responded because you didn't mention what area you want to pursue in graduate school. Is that EE or CS, or some other engineering? In any of these cases, the GRE Quant will play a big role. You're 760 on quant may sound high but it is below 90% as you might know. However, some very good schools say that the average of the admitted students were around 780 or so, meaning that there are people who got admitted with less than 780!!

Anyway, I think your GPA will play a big role. In my opinion, get a certificate from your university stating that you are second in the class. I got one that I'm first in the class and that'll surely help according to some of my admitted friends. You're TOEFL is good considering that you can get the 270 with the essay score.

The weightage highly depend on the university. Some Us may look at it as a filtering process... others may look at the GPA as a filtering process. It highly depends. E-mail some graduate students that are enrolled in the university of your choice and ask them about their scores...

Good luck!
