    anybody applying in EUROPE?

    Hi!

Was wondering if anybody applies/ have applied to these universities (MASTER Computer Science in particular):

    EPFL and ETH (Switzerland)
TU Munich, FU Berlin, RWTH Aachen (Germany)
    TU Delf, U Amsterdam (Holland)
    KTH Stockholm (Sweden)

There are lots of advices online and tones of student folklore about the American universities but scarcely any about the European ones.
I don't plan to leave the old continent... so any information would be very helpful:

    - what would be a good GRE score for these universities?
    - what would be a good GPA (or let's say average grade in ECTS system)?
    - what style should one adopt in the motivation letter?
    - how difficult is to get a financial aid/ scholarship?

    Hope to get some input!

    Yours,
    Cristina

thanks, but no thanks! haven't u heard of the proverbial "talent" of french earthlings for foreign languages? and I don't speak french!

now seriously, I've already studied in Germany and Sweden and know the level and what to expect...
and according to http://www.arwu.org/rank/2004/Top%20...iversities.htm there aren't that many good french schools either...

I'm actually looking for a good program in COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE and/or BIOINFORMATICS... tips, anyone?!

The Shanghai ranking is almost pointless for normal studens, especially when the university is not Top 100 there. It's based on anglo-Saxon magazines, Nobel prize winners and does not match well with the higher education elite system in every country.

Whenever you are a respective member of the Max Planck Society or Helmholtz society, Leibniz and even Fraunhofer there is not any need to have a complex towards the average MIT graduate.

No offense, but you seem to have no clue about French universities.

Grande Écoles are even more selective and more "elitist" than very most universities in front of them in international rankings.
Most of the CEOs of the worldwide fortune 500 are from Harvard or French universitues, ParisTech is number 2 after Harvard, they are not a known brand to everyone though. ;-)

    upps, very old thread

The interesting thing is, to get into an ivy league school ist often much easier for the master than for the bachelor. In other countries the selection begins after the master (Germany) or is really hard (India, China, France).

The Italian university of PISA is behind Rome in some of these lists. They don't make too much sense for normal students. They rather rank accumulated research capacity. For some a dual learning university with almost none academic prestige might be best, for others an academic career in the Netherlands. They have excellent conditions in what they do and no bubble.
