can i get into MIT?

Hello sir,

my scores are

Gre-1470
verbal-730
quant-760

Ielts-8.0/9.0

MSc in Chemical research from queen mary uni of london
75%(rank 1 in a class of 4)
as part of Msc 1 year research experience but no publications yet.

BSc(hons) in physics from Presidency college calcutta
58.5%(class topper had 78%) and 64% in chemistry which was a pass subject

I will b giving my subject gre and expect a top score.I want to do my PhD in chemistry.

What do you think my chances are for ivy league inst. like MIT and Stanford?

since I want a research career a Phd from a second rung uni is only going to lower my chances.

What do you think? Should I apply for MIT and Stanford or wait for a couple of years and get some research ex

CalmLogic 's dreams are becoming reality.
These schools are so above my league that I really don't know how super selective they are. Nonetheless, my impression is that, based on your profile, you may need publications that are brilliantly good, e.g. something that wins a top paper award at a good conference.

That is not at all accurate. The Ivy League was originally an athletic conference, nothing more. There are Ivy League schools that are top-tier in some or all diciplines, and other Ivy League schools that are not. (For example, Brown is part of the Ivy League, but you probably don't want to do your PhD in chemistry there.) And there are schools that are not part of the Ivy League that are equally strong in terms of reputation, research, and academic placement of graduates (Stanford and MIT, which you ask about, are examples of excellent schools that are not part of the Ivy League).

"Ivy League" does not mean top tier, and you should be more concerned about a school's strength within your field than about it's brand-name recognition.

My friend got through to Brown PhD in Chem last year with full funding.

3 years undergraduate degree from University of Delhi, 75% academics, 2 summer research projects and 800q 640verbal.

Is this a bad profile?

Despite the origin of the term, people do say Ivy league when they mean top tier. This is just how the language has evolved.

Princeton even says
The phrase [Ivy League] is no longer limited to athletics, and now represents an educational philosophy inherent to the nation's oldest schools. 1
Personally I never say Ivy league when I mean top school, and I too lament the now ambiguous meaning of this term. Nonetheless I cannot change the direction of our language's evolution.

If there is anything term whose barbarous use we must oppose it is utilize, the most hideous word ever to infect modern English.

Since you aren't from the US, you can't really understand how academia is structured here. Its based on talent and the reputation of your program and advisor more so than the prestige of your school. Ultimately your advisor will be the one that gets you your first faculty position. Anyways, I don't think you have a chance as your profile looks underwhelming for the schools you are applying to, "safeties" included. And to want full funding at your schools is ludicrous at best. Aim lower, a lot lower.

Hi there

thanks for the comment. As far as US academia is concerned I have friends there and evry1 says US is floatng with so many PhDs nowdays that it has no worth until it is from a top tier univ. Since I have it from the horse's mouth so i know what i am talking about.

it is really difficult to get jobs in academia these days. Also there have been a series of articles published on these in US news.
