Hi ficsur. I don't know about that area, maybe someone could give you an idea.

But, I do have a CONJECTURE

Almost all top (say top 20) programs decide on their admitted and rejected students on early February and maybe in few cases, the possible waitlisted ones, later. This is because all information posted, say on gradcafe, on acceptance is early February and even though some other later info appears, the decision was taken sooner than that. I bet that no top school admits one later, that is to say, if you are not contacted by Feb 15 (by email), either you're out or have very small chance of being waitlisted.
I think I can justify my reasoning with some pieces of evidence:
*Mathematicians like precision, am I right? (Yes I am...) So, they like to have set things early and decided, no details floting around.
*Top schools will fight for the best applicants, the sooner you contact them the better.
*Experienced mathematicians know quite clearly which ones are the most likely to succeed (not implying the rejected ones won't), so is not quite difficult to rank and select in short time the ones (say in contrast with humanities, where it's all more subjective).

I'll be glad to know if someone knows from a top school (all in math) which has admitted a student latter in the process (say later that Feb 15).

Otherwise, I'll be inclined to think my conjecture is true.
So, not wanting to disappoint you, but if you're waiting for a top school you haven't heard of, you'll be out.

Share any insight (or inside knowledge of departament admissions) you have in this matters.

To reply zw849's post.

I think the conjecture is generally true. But top school is sometimes hard to define. Of course, there are some which are well-known. But there are some schools which lie between the best and the second best.

I am still waiting for some schools, which still do not have any decision on me. (You can read my earlier post to see which schools are they). They are (quite) good at the field I am interested in.

I guess several of them may have just started the meeting for admission decision. To be specific, I mean Boston and UT Austin. They said they are going to release the results in mid-March.

Of course I know I may be on the waitlist of some the the schools, say Michigan. But I don't know whether I am rejected since they have not contacted me yet.

Anyway does anyone hear from Washington (Seattle pure math)? They said, again, will have decision in the beginning of March. There is only one post in gradecafe which says he/she was accepted. I don't konw they are sending email inclduing acceptances and rejections at the same time, or the former first and the latter second.

If anyone has news about these, please tell us. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I know there were students (at least two, should be more) who were accepted by Stanford and Yale in the late Feb and early March last year and the second last year respectively. They are international students. So the question is whether you regard these two schools as top school or not.

I know several international applicants who were admitted in to schools like Berkeley,Stanford,NYU,Yale at the end of February or in the beginning of March.Maybe the decisions were made earlier, but they didn't take the initiative of emailing the gradchairs like us.

Does anyone have an opinion regarding Caltech vs. UPenn? I'm interested in geometry, mathematical physics (TQFT, String Theory, etc.), integrable systems, etc.

You got me wrong on the earlier post. I am not waiting around for the so called "BIG" schools to admit me. I only applied to four schools "UIUC/IU/Purdue/Stony-Brook", and I was admitted by all four.

My problem is that I can't decide myself upon where to go ... All of the above four schools are similarly ranked top 30, but non top 10 ... and I received the same offer (TA support) from all of them.

I am mainly interested in complex analysis. I am not interested in going to a Big school where there is no faculty I can work with.

So the problem is the same ...

Does anyone know anything about UIUC/IU/Purdue/Stony-Brook ?

I hope I ask this in the right thread. Anyone know whether Texas A&M Ph.D. Math has flyout for those admitted with TA? If so, when? and whether the dept would provide any fund for that?

ficsur,
I believe Stony is really very strong in topology. UIUC may be your best bet in Analysis. Are you absolutely certain about your decision to do Analysis??
Why did you apply to only 4 places? I'd say you god the winner's curse man; you would've made it into a top 10 school. You just caught the wrong tail of your distribution. We know it fairly well to be Gaussian when normalized. These outcomes are random variables of bounded variance and converge pretty quickly.

hi,

Somehow I don't understand the most of you people. It seems to me that most of you choose a school by its name and it's fame. You think that all of the BIG schools have all the good PhD advisers and professors.

Well, if you look at mathsci.net you will find out that this is not always true. There are a lot of people at big universities who are inactive.

I am quite sure that if I will get to write my PhD, I will write it in Complex Analysis or in something related to it. I have chosen schools that have similar research interests.

As far as I know the only two big schools(Top 10) where you can do Complex Analysis is UCLA and Michigan. For some reason I have not applied to these places.

The schools i have chosen are all fine institutions for this purpose. All of them have world famous professors in the Field.

Purdue(Lempert, Eremenko, ...)
Indiana(Bedford ...)
UIUC(D'Angelo, Hinkannen)
Stony-Brook(Sullivan, Milnor)

Does anyone over here have a cleat idea about the field he would like to work in? It seems to me that there aren't a lot of people. Please excuse me (and correct me) if I am wrong ...

As all of you do, I am also reading your posts every day in order to forget a bit (if it is possible) the admissions process. I am an international student from greece and I have been admitted by the UIUC (on the 26th of January). They told me that they will make me a financial offer in March....

This is my first post in your forum and I would like to answer to fiscur's last post. The correct way to choose a University to continue your Ph D studies in is to make a very thorough search in the mathscinet. The best thing to happen for someone is to be accepted by a very prestigious university where he/she can conduct the research he/she wants. My uncle, who got his Ph D from UC Berkeley, keeps telling me that in your visit card you do not have any room to say that I got my Ph D from the University of Kentucky with the best professor in complex analysis. That is why (in my opinion) many people bet a lot on the name of the institution that they will continue their studies in.

In general fiscur I agree with you, but this is another point of view that may some people share.

Have a nice day.
