That's exactly what happens. When you graduate and look for a job in academia, the first thing the committees will look at in your CV is the name of the institution you graduated from. Respected names give good first impressions. It's a fact of life unfortunately.
And by the way, I don't mean big schools, I mean top/respected schools (doesn't have anything to do with number of people, a small institution can have extremely strong research). |

It is also possible to be enrolled in one university and have a supervisor from another university,if your university is located in a suitable place. Then you can get the both the doctoral degree and the supervisor of your choice.I told somebody a few days back that he/she should go to Michigan and not to Bekeley if he/she likes Algebraic Geometry. Now that I think of it,he/she can go to Bekeley, but take somebody from UCLA/Caltech as his/her advisor,if he/she doesn't mind making journeys regularly.

Umm...Berkeley and Caltech/UCLA are not at all close.
Berkeley is about 400 miles from Los Angeles and from personal experience it takes about 6 hours to drive from Caltech to Berkeley under ideal traffic conditions (which of course never actually exist)... As for having advisors at nearby schools other than your own (like at Stanford when you're at Berkeley or at UCLA when you're at Caltech): this is generally only possible in special cases, like if your original advisor leaves and makes arrangements with one of his collaborators to work with you (this happened to someone I know here at Caltech: his advisor left for U Chicago and a very very famous prof. at UCLA agreed to become his new advisor). This sort of thing is NOT something you should count on when choosing a grad school, especially places with way too many grad students (and high attrition rates) like Berkeley and UCLA where an advisor of *any kind* in your research area can be difficult to find unless you're perceived to be one of the better people there. |

In terms of enrolling at one institute and having an advisor at another, it seems to be possible if you are in a major "math hub" of the world and the distance is not too far. I had a research advisor who got her PhD from U Chicago, but met with an advisor from Northwestern on a weekly basis. I imagine if you are in LA you can meet with other LA schools, San Francisco other San Fran Schools (Berkeley, Stanford, Santa Cruz, etc.), Chicago, Boston, New York, Philly/Princeton.
I am personally not going to choose a place with the expectation that I will want an advisor elsewhere; it just doesn't seem like a good operating mindset for starting PhD studies somewhere. For Ficsur, et al., I think the only way to decide is to visit the place. If you are going to spend 5 years somewhere, you should make sure you see yourself as being pretty damn happy there. Best of luck to everyone! |

Hi, I'm graduating this year after 3 yr of undergraduate study in math. But right now I'm not so sure what area I would like to pursue for my graduate studies. However it most likely would be some branch of analysis. If this is the case, and if I could choose from Yale and U Michigan, which place do you guys suggest?

Hey creampiggy.
I guess your advisor could give you an idea in choosing grad school. There are lots of different factors to consider as you may know. And many branches of analysis too (functional, harmonic, real, complex, etc). |

Urgent!!!
Anyone got accepted in Northeastern but not planning to go to there, please tell the grad chair or anyone who is responsible for this ASAP!!!! I am on the waitlist of Northeastern and I really want to go there!! Thank in advance. Also, Boston and Northeastern seem to send out the first wave of admission offers. |

Hi all, great discussion...
Anyone against talking applied math programs in here? I had thought that my gre math score of 740 was pretty solid and would help contrast the fact that I am coming from a virtually unknown masters program, but it looks like most have done much better. I too was mislead by Penn's advertised stats. I have been denied from Berkeley, Yale, and UWash. Still waiting to hear from Comp. & Applied Math at UT-Austin, Applied Math at UC-Boulder, and Mathematics at Arizona State. Maybe I should have tried more schools in the ASU range... |

On the 31st of January 2008 I got a formal letter via mail, by UIUC, that I have been admitted for the phd program of the Mathematics Department. In that letter the director of the graduate studies wrote that because I am an international applicant they will decide about my financial aid request in march. I have read in the "thegradcafe" that some international students have already been notified about their financial aid, but till now I have no news from UIUC. Is that bad? I am really worried about it. At least, is there any possibility to get a tuition waiver? In the application there was such an option at the section about the financial aid. What kills me is my GRe subject which is very low (I really committed suicide) but I have a GPA of 3.8 in my masters program.
Do you have any ideas of what I should do? The case that they have not contacted me till now is it so bad? The thing that really confuses me is that I have been admitted very early which might mean that the department wants me.... Any help at this point will be more than desirable ![]() |
