Hello! I am a EU national currently a senior in a US University where I double majored in Math and Economics. I want to continue my studies in England. I have been accepted to both Oxford and LSE but for different programs. In Oxford for Mphil in Economics and in LSE for MSc in Applicable Mathematics (MSc in Applicable Mathematics at the LSE - About the Programme). I would really apreciate some feedback on what you think would be the best choice. I am not sure what my goals are, I guess a job in academia would be wonderful but I wouldnt dismiss a good offer from an investment company. These are my thoughts....
1) the program in Lse is rather new...and it is a program from the Mathematics department in Lse so I was wondering if it would still look good in my resume (since Lse is more well known for its economics dept). 2) The program in LSE is more expensive than the Mphil in Eco, even though the first is 1 year and the other 2 years. 3) Ofcourse I am also considering the college life each Uni has to offer...I dont know much about Oxford city, but I really like London even though it would be very expensive. 4) Which program do you believe would be best if I want to continue with a Phd later on ? If I attend Lse and then I apply to their Phd program in Mathematics...do you believe that I can get a job at a University easy ? Again thank you...I am really confused soo I would really appreciate any help you can give me. Last edited by fofos : 2008 March 31st at 12:51 AM. |

Wouldn't the two programs be quite different? I think you should do what you will enjoy doing most, but I can't comment on whether an MPhil or MSc makes it easier to go on to a DPhil. LSE and Oxford would be quite different experiences - city wise, London's not my thing, but I love Oxford, and I like the college system. And I wouldn't worry about the reputation of the LSE maths department; I'm sure they attract excellent students and researchers, and would be very good at things like game thoery, finance, OR, etc.

Thanks for your comments. Yes the two programs are quite different, and the one in LSE is kind of unique to what it has to offer and thats why I applied to it. Still rejecting Oxford is not an easy thing...it is very tempting. Anw again thank you
