How about "protective outer layer"?

I know this is an old one- but the given answer does not seem right. I think mammal:skin is a better answer.. - a cell cannot live without its membrane, a mammal cannot live without skin.
Any other comments, anybody?

Eagle, I think you do have a point... but still, GRE questions usually want you to find out what is the best answer among the choices given.

The best one is indeed MELON:RIND, since there could be many things that a mammal could not live without (water, oxygen, etc), but there's just one function of a MEMBRANE and RIND towards a CELL and MELON respectively.

Dont mean to be annoyingly stubborn abt a point- but doesnt skin serve as a protective outer covering for mammals , as well as rind to a melon and membrane to a cell?- please explain your exclusion criteria.

First of all, folks, I should tell you that I wrote this one myself, meaning the "given" answer is not necessarily inviolable. I (nor any other non-ETS entity) cannot subject my questions to the same testing and rigor that ETS does.

Let me just tell you what I was thinking when I wrote this question. The rind/membrane is an outer protective layer that also "contains" the stuff inside. The skin of a mammal is really just a thin layer that doesn't protect or "contain" the stuff inside.

The part about whether or not X can live without Y applies to both to A and E, so that's not the bridge.

I agree that mammal : skin is a contender, and I'd choose it if melon : rind were not available.

Actually, I have a set of questions like this, and I wrote many of them to have very tricky "second best" answer choices.

By all means, please dispute anything I've said if you think I've made a mistake.

Alright, thanks Erin. The reasoning required in GRE analogies always worries me- hence the persistence.
