Is there any misunderstanding of "complement" and "compliment" here?.

shouldnt it be endorse:esteemed? (approval, and honoured approval)
one apologises when they are sorry at having done something wrong, and contrition essentially means feeling remorse (a greater degree).

If it was endorse:agree or endorse:approve, it would work. Unless your grandmother is running for office, you can esteem her without endorsing her.

D is the right answer...

D seems the most logical answer. Someone who is contrite has a strong urge to appologize (as they are sorrowful and remorseful). A person who is impressed has a strong urge to compliment.

The only doubt i had was Aggravate::Contemptuous. But after a closer look, if the pairing were Disdain::Contemptuous it would be suitable. Otherwise, it doesn't make the cut.

Definitely D. This is a reversed cause and effect question.
When you are feeling contrite, you apologize.

When you feel contemptuous someone else has aggravated you.
When you esteem someone, you give them praise or respect, not necessarily an endorsement.
When you are guilty you don't necessarily extenuate your crime (to represent (a fault, offense, etc.) as less serious). Some people plead guilty and apologize. (since a guilty persons reaction here could go either way, it's not a logical, solid answer).
When you are impressed, however, you do compliment. (That's a logical and common reaction). When you're modest you're not rationalizinganything, but are rather demeaning your own skills or talents.

This was a little tricky, but I'd definitely pencil in D.
