I would go for A, but I am not entirely convinced...

Isn't something stygian characterized by darkness and gloomness? This bridge would fit to A; however, it might also fit to C?!

I felt E would fit in too..
Bridge- something that is X is Y. But this qualifies A,C and E.
So , Vario- if we consider Y is a necessary quality of X- then E is ruled out,perhaps C too.
Another reason to prefer A is that both have negative connotations.
The answer is A..Jackal what bridge did you use?

Eagle, cataclysmic is among the 1st 10 wordlists in Barrons and I believe it means 'deluge, upheavel'. deluge is a flood and upheavel is a violent disaster. Correct me if i'm wrong! The bridge I used is based on degree, stygian is extremly dark, deathly that sort of thing. So abysmal which is in the 1st or 2nd wordlist in Barrons means bottomless or extremely low.
