does questioning authority helps society?
"The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority."
‘A government to the people, for the people, by the people’ is the definition of ideal democratic government by Abraham Lincon. As in this world of democracies, only the authority which is constantly observed by the people can function as a true welfare government. I therefore, fully agree with the given statement that questioning the authority by the people can enhance welfare in the society. Only honest, qualified and patriot rulers can take up the proper measures to do welfare to their society. As government is a permanent institution now a days, it must be accountable to the public for its all important actions. This accountability and responsibility increases only when the public is free to question and even criticize the steps of the government. By this process a government strives to become the ideal one of democracy: to the people, by the people, for the people. As no man is immune from vices, same is true for government officials also, and surveylance acts like warning signs in a computer for the public servants. One story from the reign of Caliph Umar of Arabia in the sixth century is relevant here. Once Umar sanctioned one piece of cloth for everyone in his town. Later in a gathering at afternoon, he appeared in a dress that was made with two piece of clothes. When Umar was speaking on the occasion, one young man stopped him and asked him suddenly where he got the additional piece of cloth. Then Umar’s son, sitting besides replied that he has given his piece of cloth to his father, who prepared the dress with that. Umar then asked the youth what he would do if he (Umar) would illegally take two pieces. He replied, ‘I would resist you with my sword’. Umar, who is regarded as one of the famous rulers in history, thanked the boy saying he is proud that people have the courage to question their ruler. Such an incident shows that questioning by the public was always a precondition to guarantee good governance, especially in democracy. Additionally, feedback from the public help the authorities to revise their development plans. Doesn’t matter what innovative plan or radical steps the government takes, reality can differ from the previous assumption as development activities always need to be updated and rectified with necessary amendments. So public questions or queries can help the authorities to guess the real situation, understand their shortcoming (if any), and direct their services to the most efficient way. However, I should warn here on a frequent cause of stalemate of welfare programs. If the authorities start to pay attention to each and every asking of the people regardless of their merits, a deadlock will soon occur. The public should be prudent and careful making their suggestion, which they sometimes are not. Sometime the individuals comment on a situation considering the personal perspective and not the collective interest. So in that case the government should be bold enough the ignore any narrow minded comments like ‘why my house has been damaged to construct the new flyover’ and take account only the well-thought and far-sighted ones. Success and development depends, thus not only depends on the government’s skill, but also appropriate and valued suggestions from the public. Both of them is complementary building a country prosperous and rich. |
