Please rate my second argument
The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores." The business manager of Valu-Mart Stores proposes to increase office-supply stock with the aim of increasing profitability of the stores. His rationale is based on a recent survey, which reported that more than 70% of the respondents are required to take more woke with them from the workplace than they were in the past. His suggestion to stock of home office machines is presumptuous, due to many flaws contained within it. First, the business manager did not provide any information about how the survey was conducted. Even we know that 70% of the participants are taking more work home from workplace, he did not provide the sample size. If the sample size is relatively small, 70% of it cannot be used to represent the entire population. In addition, it is unclear that whether the participants are from the neighbourhood. Therefore, the business manager's suggestion is not substantiated by the survey result. Second, the business manager indicated that there have been no impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, which this has rendered himself a disadvantaged position to increase the stock supplies. By merely increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines will not help to increase sales in the departments. There may be a number of reasons why the office-supply department are not making profits, such as their machines are not comparable to the other brands, their customer services are not as helpful as the other company. All these factors may play a role in affecting the sales of the department, which the business manager should find out the culprit of it before making his next move. Third, the business manager's statement that the department will become the most profitable component of the stores with the increase in office supplies is questionable. The survey suggested that more people compared than in the past are now taking work home from workplace, but it does not suggest that there is a demand of home office supplies. Without further information about the demand and profitability of the office supplies, the business manager may put the department in great danger and eventually losing money. The market may have already saturated with the office supplies that customers do not need more machines anymore. The manager should look further to find out the needs of the customers before stocking the supplies in his department. In sum, the argument is tenable as it stands. The business manager cannot make such assumption merely based on one survey result. He should understand that increasing stock supplies do not increase sales, but increase the number of customers. Without information about the demand of the office supplies, the manager should not increase all the stock supplies significantly, which this may render losing money in the department. Had he taken the above factors in view, he would have been rendered the argument irrefutable. |
