The following appeared in a memorandum to faculty from the academic vice president of Waymarsh University.
"So that we can better accomplish Waymarsh University's academic goals, we should adopt the job-opportunity (job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College and strongly encourage all students at Waymarsh to participate in it. The success of the job-op program at Plateau is evident: Over the past two years, more than 75% of the freshmen at Plateau have enrolled in the optional job-op program. Moreover, at Plateau, the grades of job-op students are consistently higher than those of other students, 90% of the job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation, and most former job-op students report much success in their careers."

The academic vice president of Waymarsh University proposes to adopt the job-opportunity (job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College in order to better accomplish its academic goals. His rationale is based on the success of the job-op program at Plateau, revealing that the grades of the job-op students are consistently higher than those of other students and the students receive job offers within a month after their graduation. The vice president’s suggestion is presumptuous, due to many flaws contained within it.
First, the vice president did not provide information about how the evaluation of the program is conducted. The method and sample size of the program are also not discussed. It is possible that the sample was predisposed to include those who favor the program and the participants of the survey are more vocal in their opinions which exclude the other students who care little about the program. Furthermore, the sample size is not given. If the freshman sample is relatively small, 75% of it may not lead to a credible conclusion. All these factors will skew the results of the evaluation.
Second, it is not logical to associate the grades of job op students and the enrollment into the program. This is a causal linkage problem. There is no information provided that the students have significantly improved their grades after enrolling into the program. It is possible that these students are doing relatively well than other students before the enrollment. Therefore, it is false to make such association.
Third, regarding the job offers and success in careers, it is unclear whether the job-op program or the technical knowledge they learn from school facilitates the student to get employed. This is again a causal linkage problem. Students who study in a Technical school usually specialize in a particular field, which lead them to find work easier than other students who study general knowledge. Therefore, there is no clear association between job op program and higher job offers.
Finally, even assuming the veracity of the evaluation result, the vice president cannot assume the program will be practical in his school, because after all they are two different schools. Waymarsh University has a larger student pool than the technical college. In addition, students who go to a university have a different career goal from the students who go to college. University students are usually more academic-oriented and may have little interest to go into the job market after graduation. They may want to pursue a Master Degree or PhD, which will be focusing on the academic field instead of real work experience.
In sum, the argument is tenable as it stands. The vice president cannot assume that Waymarsh University will have the same effect as Plateau after adopting the job-op program. As well, a job op program may not be an attractive option for the university student if their career goals are focused in the academic field. Forcing his students to participate the program may end up wasting their studying time and influencing their academic performances, which turns out to be a counterproductive act.
