People should not be misled by the advertising competition between Coldex and Cold-Away, both popular over-the-counter cold medications that anyone can purchase without a doctor's prescription. Each brand is accusing the other of causing some well-known, unwanted side effect: Coldex is known to contribute to existing high blood pressure and Cold-Away is known to cause drowsiness. But the choice should be clear for most health-conscious people: Cold-Away has been on the market for much longer and is used by more hospitals than is Coldex. Clearly, Cold-Away is more effective
Competition is a natural human tendency whether it is at industrial level or marketing level. The scenario discussed here depicts that Coldex and Cold-Away are solely made to cure cold. This is a ubiquitous fact that every medication has its side effects, long term or short term. Hence it is up to consumers which medication is best suited for their body and physique. Conclusion derived from the argument seems to be baseless, because it lacks several logics and reasons. Let us look at some reasons through which argument can be more convincing. Firstly, the cost of both the pills has not been discussed in the argument. Cost of Cold-Away may be a major factor to be chosen by most hospitals, because hospitals require medicines in bulk. Cold –Away may be much cheaper than Coldex, and hence has been on market since a long time. Since Cold – Away is meant for treating general cold, people do not give much heed to the quality and other factors before purchasing it. It is also not specified the regions where its price varies, because usually in case of medicines its price varies from region to region. Medicines are sold cheaper in the vicinity where it is manufactured or produced. Secondly, the reason being Cold – Away is on market for a long time may be because of advertisements and more marketing schemes. There may be some schemes related to buying Cold – Away which may lure customers and hence make cold away more market friendly. Sales are also based on the size and profits of the company which may be favorable for Cold-Away rather than coldex. So, it would not be apt to conclude that Cold – Away is more effective just because it has been on market since a longer time than Coldex. Thirdly, it is mentioned that Coldex contributes to existing blood pressure while Cold –Away leads to drowsiness. Every medication has some side effects which may aggravate their present health factors and make them worse. Being more illucid the argument should quote what side effects do Coldex have on people who do not have blood pressure problems. Consumption of pills may vary due to the timing. An employee of a firm who has cold in the morning will never like to take Coldex in morning because it will hamper his work due to dizziness. Long term side effects are also a major factor in deciding up on which pill to consume. Content of the pill like the dosage amount may also segregate the pills in categories like for kids, adults, old etc. Hence the argument may be correct in stating the respective side effects of each tablet, but it lacks statistical data. Adequate surveys and numerical data must be provided to substantiate the conclusion. Depicting a direct relationship between market friendly medicine and it’s effectiveness to cure the disease is completely based on assumptions. Consumers have to satiate their minds before pounding on the decision of choosing suitable medication. |
