Plz evaluate the argument topic-
The following is a memo from the principal of Academia High School.
"Academia High School should abolish its after-school performing-arts programs and replace them with computer-technology programs. When nearby Techno High School did so last year, total enrollment in all of its after-school activities remained about the same. Moreover, on entering college, many Techno students chose a major directly related to their after-school activities. On the other hand, last year only 10 percent of Academia's graduating seniors chose performing arts as their major field of study in their first year of college, clearly indicating that most students do not have a strong interest in the performing arts." The argument concludes that Academia High School should abolish its after-school performing-arts programs and replace them with computer-technology programs. The author espouses his decision by saying that one year back, nearby Techno High School also abolished its after-school performing-arts programs which didn’t make any impact on its total enrollment in all of its after-school activities. In addition, the author claims that many Techno students chose a major directly related to their after-school activities in their freshman year. Moreover, last year only 10 percent of Academia's graduating seniors chose performing arts as their major field of study in their freshman year which indicates that most students do not have a strong interest in the performing arts. The argument is not entirely logically convincing because it ignores certain crucial assumptions. First, the argument assumes that replacing the after-school performing-arts programs by computer-technology programs will not make any impact on enrollment in all of Academia’s after-school activities. Such assumption is totally lack of sufficient evidence and statistical data. The author claims that the total enrollment in Techno High School remained same after abolishing after-school performing-arts programs. But there is no statistical evidence to prove such claim. Only a year steady enrollment doesn’t mean it will remain steady in subsequent years. May be this year, the enrollment will reduce. Second, the argument assumes that many Academia students will chose a major directly related to computer-technology programs in their freshman year. This is totally a base less surmise. May be the students of Academia have inborn inclination to arts, literature rather than technology. So they might not choose a major which is based on computer technology programs. Third, the argument assumes that last year only 90 percent of Academia's graduating seniors chose their major field of study other than performing arts in their freshman year which is an indication of their disinterest in the performing arts. This is also lack of statistical data. May be most of the Academia’s graduating students didn’t choose Academia for college education rather the selected another colleges. Thus, the argument is not completely sound. The evidence in support of the conclusion that Academia High School should abolish its after-school performing-arts programs and replace them with computer-technology programs does little to prove that conclusion. Ultimately, the argument might have been strengthened if the author could have shown that adequate reliable statistical data and evidences in support of his argument. |
