Hi,
Here is an issue essay. PRACTISE ESSAY 4 QUESTION: "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study." ANSWER: I disagree with the statement that a field of study can advance only when outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study. The primary fact to be noted is that pioneers in each field never expect support and corroboration from outsiders. Take for example, the case of research studies in the development of a vaccine. Scientists and technicians in this field strive continually to find the ultimate solution. The process becomes a routine and habitual one. No one would be able to countenance an intruder who claims to have a plausible and better approach. This in turn becomes detrimental to the research as a whole. The process may then be delayed or even discontinued fearing plagiarism and misappropriation. After all, humans never cease to doubt coevals. The important concepts supporting my point are that, the new-entrant may have little or no cognizance of the subject. This could lead to even greater problems than that presumed. Secondly, the outsider could be misleading in his/her ideas. This could surely delay the advancement process. Consider the case of professionals of every field turning towards information technology. Though initially the field benefited from outsiders, it now seems to suffer from a high state of intrusion. People of that field find it difficult to cope with the excessive pressure. In the long run, the quintessence of their specialization has been questioned. The quality of service offered has drastically reduced and the field has been forced into dormancy. This can be mainly attributed to the fact that outsiders tried to accompany the specialists of that field. Had it been for the specialists alone, the development process would have been gradual. The quality would have been maintained and their skills utilized effectively. Thus, the advancements in each field are contingent to the strains taken by the specialists of that field alone. Outsiders could never aid in the development process. They could, least of all, create chaos and confusion. Only through long-term research and careful observation can a field see remarkable growth. This can never be achieved with constant distractions from outsiders. Hence, I disagree with the claim that a field cannot advance without outsiders bringing in their knowledge and experience. |

Hi Synthia,
Your views on the issue are pretty good, though I would probably agree with the contrary. Btw, you could have made the essay more 'formal' by moderating the references to yourself (the I's). |

Hi Xaero,
Thanks for the comments. I would love to see an essay contradicting my point on the same topic!! [ Do too many 'I's make it too informal??]I actually didn't give it much thought while writing the essay. I'll consider it for my next one though! |

hi synthia!im new.this is a response on the contrary outlook for practice essay 4.
No man is an island-this has been proved from times immemorial when our ancestors lived together to ensure safety and spread of knowledge for better survival value. What one knew by experience, the others knew through communication.when one knew to be aware of the uses of fire, the other followed suit.when one invented a wheel, the other used the present knowledge and coupled it with his own to make a moving cart! One discovery led to the other and new blocks were added to the already existing structure to build a whole castle.all animals have a certain degree of intelligence, but what distinguished man was his assimilation of knowledge from different sources to produce a new understanding and use of things.it was this intelligent use of cognizance that has brought man to his present status of numero uno. Even today, the development of man is contigent on his expanse of vision. For eg. in advance research field like genetics, discovery of the dna sequence was not the work of one man or country .in fact it was a collective effort to find the decode whole genetic information.one man used the knowledge of the other to get ahead of the former,so much so as to create a whole new clone!even countries nowadays promote student exchange and proffessional exchange programmes to exchange existing knowledge.also, doctors of one field often meet to conduct seminars and discuss their views on certain issues. Outside information is especially helpful to correct a scientist who may be wrong.in absence of such knowledge, the person may base a heap of useless findings on that wrong assumption. Thus,in such cases, outside knowledge can save the waste of money and resources.Any study can go around in futile circles without the necessary tangential push from outside. Even school nowadays are acknowledging the importance of outside knowledge to increase the ken of knowledge and experience of the students in their nascent years.thus, there is an increased trend towards interschool debates, discussions and contests.if these are not a premature attempt at assimilative learning then what else? in the end i would like to conclude that each of us can at the most contribute a rung to an existing ladder but together we can reach the sky.study, like any other area of survival is not an isolated form, but a collective attempt to seek the truth and develop things further in order that the whole mankind and its contemporaries benefit from it. |

Hi Nikita,
Welcome to this group. As I can see from ur essay, u consider people of other countries as outsiders. That is a different way of understanding the topic. I took outsiders as people not from the same field of study i.e. say an engineer getting involved in medicinal research or something!! Anyway, Urs has a nice touch to it. u've given several examles to make ur point. Good. There r a few minor Grammatical mistakes. u can of course correct them to make a really good essay.( But these r only my views) |

Hi Nikita,
Don't worry. As u asid practise brings perfection. U aren't that bad in writing essays. So don't grovel. Hey, u can practise tying something other than the actual essay. Say an autobiography(just for practise). That way, u will be able to bring down ur thoughts faster and also practise typing faster. So, U become glib in typing and thinking! Try this out.BTW have u finished Verbal and quant? |
