ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."580 wordsSome people hold that scandals can be useful as they catch people attention on problems in a particular way, which go beyond the role of any speaker or reformer could play. I well admit that scandals – whether in politics, academia, or other areas – can facilitate the government perfection. Unfortunately, the statement has only seen one side of the coin, whereas neglects the negative impact which scandals will bring on our society. Scandals always come in front of publics with highlight. It is people’s intrinsic curiosity about the secret and gossip of elites and celebrities that leads to great attention on scandals in the first place. One famous psychologist once said, as I paraphrased here, that the ordinaries usually have tendency to poke the seamy side of those authorities or celebrities, so that they can find a balance between them. Then people would subconsciously affirm that these prominent ones are just as ordinary people as themselves. For this reason, scandals – in politics, academia and other realms, would surely draw much more attention than common events. In the eyes of public, politic scandals serve as a mirror to reflect the imperfection of government mechanism. The mass media usually amplify and overemphasize the seriousness of scandals in order to attract people’s eyes. This further enables the people to superintend their government, which would benefit the public most. The Watergate Scandal could be an example at this point. The Watergate Scandal, however, led the resignation of Richard Nixon in his second term because of the erosion of his support in Congress and losing of nationwide popularity. After the political maneuvering and underhanded tricks are revealed, nation-wide attention demand the matter to be fairly, immediately and thoroughly investigated. Widespread public concern for this scandal also helped to prevent any more dishonest dealings. In short, a political scandal involving abuse of power and bribery and obstruction of justice help government identify system cracks, regulation loopholes, misconceptions and lies that are not easily noticeable by normal measures.Lending even more credence to this point is the fabrication in South Korea stem cell research in academia area. The South Korean scientist who claimed a stunning series of advances in cloning and stem cell research has admitted that critical parts of one discovery were fabricated. The fraud not only stirs worldwide anger, astonishment and dispute among the global science community, but also puts research committees and public into afterthought. Although this academia scandal is a serious wrongdoing that has damaged the foundation of science, it corrected the science community’s misconception in cloning research. Also, it helped to heighten public awareness to many issues like honesty in scientific research, and rectified the public’s previous credulity on groundbreaking announcements. Otherwise, the problems uncovered in this case might as well go hided and unnoticed if not for the scandal. However, scandals in entertainment business have always been unduly exaggerated, even proved to be rumors. Scandals, particular sex scandals among pop stars, bring about a lot of guessing and suspicion among outsiders, which occupied too much attention and time of the mass. Besides, the speaker also ignores the decided tendency on the part of media and entertainment companies to use the influence of scandals to maximize profits. The end result is that viewers have unusually been cheated by these fake scandals. To sum up the aforementioned analysis, scandals are double-edged swords. While they can reveal hidden problems, the widespread attention they drew can sometimes impede the investigation of the matter.
