"Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."

There is a saying in Hindi, the Indian national language, which goes 'Sach hamesha choobhta hai' - Truth always hurts. Well, even if not always, truth does hurt a lot of times and it is very uncomfortable to digest the truth when it breaks the man-made barriers and invades his naive assumptions!

A burning example is the existence of terrorism in todays world. What is the biggest motivating factor behind terrorism today? Yes, its difficult to accept for me , being a muslim myself, but its the Islam. Believe me, this truth hurts me and millions and millions of Muslims all across the world. When the word Islamic terrorism was first coined, the secularists and the Islamic world was riled. Associating an activity as henious as this with religion was extremist view for them and it was contrary to the existing notion that made people believe crime was crime, it had no religion.

Slowly but surely, the usage of the term Islamic terrorism increased and it is an accepted term now. People had to accept that most of the terrorism stemmed from extremists of Islam and from misinterpretation of the teachings of Islam. There was no running away from the truth, one day people of the world had to accept this.

Another case in point is match-fixing in various sports. Take the game of cricket for example. The huge fan base of cricket in India was shattered when it came to light that matches they were watching were rigged! It was impossible for them to accept that such a thing could happen. They thought, how can an individual be so materialistic and put money before country and pride? They even proclaimed the allegations were a conspiracy. It took a long time for them to accept that such a thing did happen. Again, there was no running away from truth. Slowly but surely they realized that there was a possibilty of such a thing happening which can't be discounted.

There is brighter side of accepting the truth which comes to the fore once mankind accepts the truth. Ignoring the truth compounds the problems associated with that truth and so, obviously, facing it gives mankind a chance to eradicate the problem. Its important to take the cognizance of even the most uncomfortable truths in order to study them, analyze the effects of them and to eradicate the problems with its the root. Even if the truth is not associated with any problem, taking the cognizance of it gives strength and prevents mankind from living in fool's paradise.

It took many hundred years for the church to accept that earth revolved around the sun! Galileo propounded the theory and not surprisingly was met with derision and ridicule from the society. Had the people of the time analyzed his theory and given him a chance to explain himself, may be mankind would have progressed at a faster pace and who knows where we would have been now! But it was not be . As always, truth faced hindrance and the only reason was it was not easy to acknowledge it in that era.

Thus, it would not be inappropriate to say that the things that hurt the most are the things that might be most true and things that need most reflection and rumination from us instead of spurn and contempt that they get!
