"As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and more mysterious."

It is tempting to believe that the men in the Neanderthal age were rather carefree and were only concerned with the conduct of basic needs. Alas! The progression of knowledge was the retinue of advancement of mankind. Questioning became the order of the day and reasoning the solution. Nothing was spared, the brightness of the stars to the soil beneath our feet. Acquisition of knowledge is by no means a simple task, for it faces immense challenge from the dogmatic. More often than not a new concept contradicts cherished belief’s that we do not want to let go. Whether knowledge makes things easier or complex is in the eye of the beholder.

A rather suitable example to illustrate the previous statement can be the discovery of the imaginary number ‘i’. At about 250 b.c , one of Pythagoras’s disciple’s accidentally stumbled upon the concept of imaginary numbers and until then they were thought of not to exist. To the student this was a profound moment , a discovery he thought could change the landscape of mathematics. However to phythogorus this destroyed the symmetry , which he loved so much, about mathematics.

The acquisition of knowledge is the essence of our progression , that which makes us superior. When Copernicus stated his theory about the earth revolving around the sun and not vice-versa as the Church believed , it created such contradictions in the human mind , something that could not be assimilated yet could not be abandoned as it was backed by science. To the dogmatic clergymen this was mysterious and made things infinitely complex and to the scientific community this was a historic moment , a period when so many unanswered questions became comprehensible.

From a forward outlook it is sacrilegious to even think , the acquisition of knowledge can make things complex . It is this knowledge that has made us who we are else we would probably still be in the cave men era. Knowledge makes us admire and value the things around us. It makes us rationale. What could be more beautiful then understanding how the sun shines , why the river’s flow.

However it would be the words of a partisan to declare that knowledge does not create a flutter of emotions , complexities we did not have to deal with. Darwin’s theory of evolution was declared heretical as it attacked the most sacred belief of man. It is indeed tough to alter our most trusted belief and faith even if it is backed by undisputable evidence.

In conclusion, it comes down to the human mind. Accepting facts over false belief, if it makes things more complex , then so be it , the motto should be ‘ the pursuit of truth’.
Progression of knowledge is paradoxical , it can either build over existing facts or mercilessly obliterate belief’s we took for granted were true

Properly structured and convinces the reader to believe that acquisition of knowledge is not a complex procedure but a pursuit of truth I was expecting you would touch upon the overwhleming process of knowledge discovery which you did in the concluding part of your analysis.
Nice work

I would give a 5. That was pretty decent work. You could have improved the structure of the passage. There were sudden transitions at few places. GRE expects you to write a bit more though. I must say, the way you started was far too good. However, you did not touch the complex aspect of knowledge much.
