It is possible to pass laws that control or place limits on people's behavior, but legislation cannot reform human nature. Laws cannot change what is in people's hearts and minds
It is correctly stated that no law or rule can curb or keep a check on human behavior. Human nature and intellect cannot be altered by regulations, but their acts can be modified according to the laws. Legislation is formed solely to control the havoc and crimes in the society. There are some people who have a tendency of creating chaos and breaking the rules. But several examples can be quoted where people have transformed themselves eventually with time. Let’s look into some examples which depict positive aspects of laws. It is a human tendency to get influenced by other people or their society. Consider for example in some Asian countries like India, female feticide is quite common in rural areas. Recently new laws have been made and the responsible person has to be under life imprisonment. Although this law may not change the thinking of orthodox people in the society, but this law has created enough awareness among people that the number of feticide killings have been reduced considerably. Government also takes initiative to deliver classes to rural areas, describing harmful effects of these killings. Thus, supplementing laws with information can be more beneficial to improve the mindset of people. Another example can be considered of Prisons which take initiatives to reform the criminals and other accused people. Thieves and fraudulent people who initially considered stealing and acquiring others’ property as their main source of income, has been transformed drastically by such reforms. Prisoners are taught some vocational courses, teamwork and selling their own items. These reforms along with laws can even change the mentality of prisoners and their life is improved. When they are released from the prison, some of them are altogether different entities in terms of their thinking and acts. It is a fact that laws are made to control those people who are aberrant from the society and lead in riots, havoc or any misdeed. But it is also true that after arresting these people or catching the lawbreakers, they should be provided with some information about pros and cons of the law. Substantiating the law will definitely act as a boon in transforming people and a peaceful environment in society. |
