"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
Scandals in general can create disturbances in avery area of work. They usualy occur on the background of difference of opinions between two or more different parties or if there are reports of internal laws violations. This kind of scandals usualy do not create a posive image of the matter in couse, but they can signalize that something is wrong and it need to be fix. Let's take politics for example. In a democratic country usualy two or more parties collaborate for a good management of all country's goods. But many times one partie wants to assume more power and so this thing can create conflicts. The other parties start making accusations which attract the attention of the media which ofcourse tend to magnify the matter. But in this way the people are notified that there is a problem in that domain and sometimes they take action. One conclusive example is the one occured in Romania in the month of august 2009 when the government desired to let go 20% of the people working in the state institutions. This caused masive strikes and this corroborated with the action of other pollitical parties managed to change the initial decision and nobody was let go at least for another six months. Another examples in which scandals can get our attention and make us see other sides of things that we think are prety perfect are those from the media. Many times a very respected artist, sport player or public figure is cought by so called paparazzi in bad hypostasis which are in contrast with the image they want to develop. This can have bad consequences for them but sometimes it can couse a personal revolution and can bring that person on the right track. We can find many examples in media of images of very respected people fallen in disgrace after this kind of scandals. To sum up scandals can be usefull, if they reflect the real side of a matter and can cause contructive actions taken by the right people. They can also be cruel and can terminate one's career or can make irreparable damages to an organization or an institution. |
